Trying to upgrade to Sierra, I need to upgrade WIFI card.

MacBook Pro 15" Early 2008 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo

My Broadcom BCM4321 card type 0x14E4, 0x8C has compatibility issue.

What would be an upgrade that would function with Sierra?

I upgraded to 512 GB SSD and upgraded to 8 GB (6 GB recognized) RAM.

I think with WiFi card needs to be upgrade I should be able to upgrade to Sierra.

How did you upgrade to Sierra on a 2008 machine?

Duh, OP said with the patcher and gave the URL!

The High Sierra and up patch added support for Broadcom BCM4321 WiFi cards. Any idea how to add that patch to Sierra??

Apple has made it so that your machine will not upgraded by removing support for it.

Disappointedly for some the new macOS will run on less machines than its predecessors including OSX 10.11 El Capitan. Apple has dropped support for any models pre late 2009 for MacBook and iMac. And anything pre 2010 for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini and Mac Pro.

You’ll still require a 64bit Intel processor, 8GBs of free disk space – if upgrading, as appose to clean install min plus at least 2GB of RAM.

The Macs that will run macOS Sierra

iMac – all models from late 2009, iMac 10,1 – 17,1

MacBook – all models from late 2009, MacBook 6,1 – 9,1

MacBook Pro – all models from 2010, MacBook Pro 7,1 – 11,5

MacBookAir – all models from 2010, MacBook Air 3,1 – 7,2

Mac Mini – all models from 2010, Mac Mini 4,1 – 7,1

Mac Pro – all models from 2010, Mac Pro 5,1 – 6,1

Which means most devices made prior to 2008 won’t be able to run it.

The ones that fall short…

– macOS Sierra won’t run on –

iMac 4,1 – 9,1

MacBook 1,1 – 5,1

MacBook Pro 1,1 – 5,2

MacBookAir 1,1 – 2,1

Mac Mini 1,1 – 3,1

Mac Pro 1,1 – 4,1

Xserve 1,1 – 3,1

Here's how I did it on a 2009 MacPro : EFI and Firmware update from 4,1 to 5,1 for Sierra Upgrade Solved

I'm aware of the above. The reason Sierra won't run is because of the wifi card. The card I believe is upgradable allowing Sierra to run.

I'm running Sierra on MacBook Pro early 2008 without using the wifi card.

I believe I am running the same card:

AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8E)

Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.24)

With Sierra

Actually Sierra WILL run on the 2008 Mac Pro, but the standard wifi card will not work, but you can install a wifi dongle and it will all work.

Also Sierra WILL run on the 15" Macbook Pro 5.1, but not on the smaller screen machine, as mine runs Sierra fine! So rather than follow the comments above blindly go and search "install Sierra on older machines"

I have a Mac Pro 3.1 and as you have found the internal Airport (WiFi) module is not compatible with Sierra, so I use an Edimax EW-7833UAC USB dongle which works well.

I am running Sierra successfully on a 2007 24" iMac (7,1) after upgrading the CPU from a T7700 to a T9500 (Penryn) and applying dosdude's Sierra patch. (If your 2008 already has a Penryn chip you don't need to do that part!) Also having the Broadcom wifi incompatibility problem, but I don't really need that on this machine. The unsupported wifi does not prevent Sierra from running. The system just doesn't see any wifi hardware. If I do someday want to replace the wifi hardware, does anyone know what model would work and has the right form factor for this machine?

Sierra will run on that machine, just the standard wifi card will not work, you can replace the standard Broadcom card with a later card, or buy the upgrade that is sold on Amazon. If you do not want to start taking your Mac Pro apart have a search for a suitable wifi dongle, which is what I did.

Easy, just buy edimax N150 wifi nano USB adapter, install the dmg driver, restart than you should see the wireless utility icon on the top right. I tested it on a imac 2007 upgraded to high sierra, with dosdude1 patch. Working flawlessly.

I think the obvious point should be made that you can simply use a wired Ethernet connection and forego replacing the wIfI module.

I live in Ontario and my ISP (Bell Canada) gives out WiFi Pods that have an Ethernet port on them, I’ve been using my WifI thru the wired Ethernet like this for months because of the higher 5G (AC) performance.

I too have a mac pro (early 2008) Mac Pro 3,1. My onboard wireless card is an AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x88). Please tell me if the following will work: I will bypass using the onboard card by using an ethernet cable to connect the mac pro to one of the pucks from my Google Wifi. the puck is able to connect wirelessly to the wireless router to give me internet signal. Will my Airport Extreme still make it impossible for me to use High Sierra on this computer?

Thank you in advance.

Good idea, so no matter what Mac OS version you install (till Mojave for iMac 2008), if WiFi card is unsupported. I´ll look for something similar here in Spain.
