Frequent freezes, hanging on apps, wierd disk errors

My two-year old iMac EMC 2211 used to be great until recently.

I've been experiencing very slow performance in virtually all applications, constant freezes, and in several instances after restarting, i got a folder icon with a (?).

I tried disk utility, and problems were repaired, after that no problems are reported. I also tried Tech tool pro with similar results. I still have the same problems described above.

I re-installed snow leopard successfully (took forever) but not even that solved the problems.

Is my HD failing? Is there a way to know without actually having to replace it?

sounds like your hard drive is failing. try running SmartUtility to check your drive, or look in the Console for disk errors. in any case, if you're suspecting disk problems, make sure you immediately back up your data!

is your iMac still covered by AppleCare? earlier this year my 2.5yr old 24" iMac started having disk errors and sometimes would boot with the flashing ?-mark. luckily Apple replaced the drive under warranty in my case

I concur. SMART Utility will tell you for sure if your drive is failing so you don't waste time pursuing other avenues. I'm glad to see Apple has listed it on their site.

Most likely, your hard drive is failing, if the read-write is slow, and it is flakey in finding an OS, than your hard drive is probably bad. you can check the cables connecting to the drive, but that's about it. You could try booting into single user mode (Hold "Option" & "S" upon hearing the chime) and type the following command: "fsck -y" (without quotations) and that basicly checks the disk and filesystem, but that can only do so much, you can also do this with force checking "fsck -f" (without quotations) if it reports any errors, than the drive is definently dead. you could try re-formating the hard drive if you haven't already done that.

Yeah looks like your HD is failing and if you repaired it and problems persist, sounds fatal. I'd backup and replace it.

My 80gb i pod is not working after updating with windows sofware. its not syncronizing any tracks after storing 2gb of music,even it will totally delete the tracks. ireally need your help?
