Backlight Not Working, Display is Black, Blank, Dark

Hi,

The MacBook Air Model A 1466 had been working great and then while in sleep mode overnight the display won't come on. The display is only black and the Apple logo is unlit but it does power on. A couple of things were done before this happened. I used the same Apple ID to login to another MacBook which I had not done before. I clicked to update some things on OS X El Capitan. It asked for a restart which I choose to restart the next day. I wiped the keyboard and display with a moist towel and wiped it with a dry towel but the computer was working with no problem for several hours then the display was closed overnight and the display does not light up. Shining a light through the Apple logo I can see that the display has some of the correct things but there is no backlight.

Some people fixed it by resetting the PRAM and SMC. That did not work. Some say remove the battery. The battery is built-in. Some say it is the backlight fuse. How to test for this? How to test if it is the inverter board, the inverter cable or some other problem? Can this be a DIY fix?

Thanks much.

Ann
