Power jack won't charge when running intensive programs

As of recently my MSI GE70 20C/20E has begun to fail to charge when I turn on an intensive game like Fallout 4. It used to be that I would turn the jack to a certain angle or put something under it to keep it a certain way and it would charge like normal, but lately even that has failed to work. On inspection, the plastic around the port is partially warped from heat (The plug in is right next to the heat vent), and the jack's tip is somewhat blackened and damaged. I've changed the charger cable and blown out the dust on the inside of the computer with a can of compressed air, blowing into the ports and vents to get everything I could, but it didn't fix the problem. It does, however, seeming to be overheating significantly less. I'm assuming this means that there are wires between the port and the battery that are melted or broken loose. Is this the case, or is there some unforeseen issue?

Hi,

If the charging jack has a poor connection with the motherboard (is it soldered directly or is it attached by a cable connection to the motherboard?) due to a dry solder joint or a fracture in the jack itself this will create resistance into the circuit path. This resistance causes a heat build up due to the current flowing through this resistance and by Ohm's Law the power dissipated (heat) is equal to the current squared multiplied by the resistance. With the amount of current supplied by the charger (it's all relative) to run the laptop and maintain the battery the power dissipated at the fault could be significant.

Since the heat distortion appears to be around the charging port, the most likely problem is that there is a problem with the port itself, either internally or where it connects to the motherboard. Given the mechanical strain that it is subjected to, simply by the action of plugging/unplugging in the charger cord or even moving the laptop with the cord attached over time this tends to weaken it.

I suggest that you open the laptop and inspect the area around the charging port and from your description replace the port.
