Stuck on apple logo and black screen

hello i bought an iphone second hand and when i try to put it on the apple logo comes there for about 5 seconds and straight after that it goes to a black screen for about 20 seconds then goes off...i tried to connect it to a computer but it just discovers it as an apple phone but itunes did not find it....i have read that it may be the battery...please help me
