Messed around with regedit, now can't boot up

I messed around in the registry editor and accidentally deleted some files. Now my computer gets stuck before password screen. I've tried safe mode and would ideally like to do a system restore. Any thoughts?

It was running on Vista. I have a w7 disk and much prefer that for an OS. Would it be possible to install 7 and keep all files and programs intact?

you can try to boot up with a live cd from windows and repair the OS.

What OS do you use? win 8 ? 7 ... ?

you can try to boot with that live cd and upgrade ( its an option in the menu when you boot up.)

let us know and good luck. ( you know you will have to change a option in the bios menu? to boot with an live cd? )
