emergency brake not working
My 1993 Mazda Protege emergency brake does not work and I need to fix it as soon as possible and I don't know where to start. Can anyone help??

@karahunter52 could be as simple as needing an adjustment to as tough as replacing the cable. Let us know if it has reaR disk or drum and also if you have any resistance when you pull the lever.

My back brakes are drum brakes.
@karahunter52 did you check the adjustment as well as the cable? Check on here about how to adjust the brakes and on here for the replacement.

Most ebrake problem come from years of neglect. Lets face it unless you have a standard transmission you don't use your ebrake then you when need it for a safety certificate so you can sell or buy a car depending on where you are and the rush is on to fix it. Start by removing the rear wheels and the brake drums then focus on where the brake cable comes through and put some sort of penetrating oil in the cable and then start trying to move the cable in and out of the case that's covering it. this is the point were most cables seize. it my be easier just to replace the cable as the area that seizes usually becomes week and can break. If your one who does use you ebrake and its not seized then the cable has probably broken somewhere and will need to be replaced . There is also the chance if your lucky that it just needs to be adjusted this is done in the inside of the car at the base of the parking brake lever.
