Battery will not charge

Battery will not charge. Seems a common problem of fairly new Dell E11 chromebooks.

None of the hard reset and reseat battery solutions will work. Neither leave it charge for 24 hours.

Charger remains cold even on hot day and charging light right side chrome book a flashes blue split second when inserting ac adapter/charger.

Seems to me that your AC adapter is at fault here. Have you tried a replacement? That would be the first place I would start before you condemn the entire unit.

I repair these all day. The main faults we find are the battery itself or the A/C adapter like Jason Stated. Check your service tag at support.dell.com and see if it is under warranty still

I have this problem as well, but a new battery did not fix the problem (this battery came with about 60% charge, and would drain when the laptop is unplugged, and only stay at its current level when plugged in to AC power. When I remove the battery completely, the laptop still runs on only AC power, which to me means that the adapter is not faulty, either. Is it possible for a faulty AC adapter to still power the laptop fully but not charge the battery even at all? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi @Paul Lascara,

It sounds as though there is a problem in the battery management area on the motherboard, as you say that it wont charge and only maintains its' charge level when the AC is connected - which is basically the same thing.

To clarify when you said "would drain when the laptop is unplugged" I assume you meant that the laptop is not switched on? This is also not right as there is only a minimal amount of discharge current from the battery when the laptop is switched off. Only sufficient to keep the Time/date working. It should be able to last for a month or more just supplying the necessary current when it is switched off. (If it is not used on the battery only in the meantime , of course.)

Have you got access to another compatible charger at all? As just measuring the Voltage supplied by the charger may not be sufficient (you have to measure the current as well ). Naturally the voltage has to be correct for the battery to charge properly but you would have to know what voltage the laptop runs at etc to know if the charger is capable of running the laptop but not charging the battery.

What does the battery charging status information in the laptop say, is it charging or charged or what, when the charger is connected?

Hi @robsmit57

You say that it "Seems a common problem of fairly new Dell E11 chromebooks." If yours is fairly new have you checked to see if the warranty period is still valid? If so perhaps it may be better to allow Dell to resolve your problem under warranty.

This is not a solution

I've worked extensively on these units and also similar to Lenovo's N21 a simple Chrome OS Recovery drive will resolve the issue,

CTRL + Refresh + Power

Insert recovery drive

should be successful, and upon rebooting or removing the drive normal charging should remain constant. I am unsure how this hardware error is influenced by the software but 8/10 3180's don't power on after charging for a day i recover the units and usually solves the issue (warranty is the next option I go after).

We ran into an issue with defective battery on our 3120 stock and order from April 2015. Some 4,000 plus units had a defective LG battery. Dell acknowledge such and worked with us on a project to proactively replace the lot of defective batteries. It was not fun and had a lot of issues with power on the devices until the batteries were all replaced. The bad LG part number was - KTCCN.

Padraicfw, would you happen to have any links pertaining to this defective battery as I have some Dell Chromebook 11's 3120 that are having the same issue. Thank you

All Dell laptops can get this problem. Dell chargers have 3 wires. One thin in the middle is used to identify the charger so computer knows how much current it may draw. Without identifying the power source the computer will run at minimum power and not charge battery.

One might think it could at least slow charge it when computer is off but sadly it wont.

Sometimes that pin is bent and straighting it out fixes it. If not then motherboard needs to be replaced.

That might be what is going on here. It's certainly consistent with the behavior I've seen. Thank you so much. Do you know where this pin would be? Is it at the connector end that going into the laptop?

Hi Paul Lascara,

If I have got it right you might be in luck if the problem is in the DC-In jack in the laptop.

Here is a link to a guide on how to remove the DC-In jack. It is a jack connected by a flex cable to the motherboard. If the problem is in the jack it should be an easy replacement. No soldering etc.

You will notice in the link that they 'advertise' 2 DC-In jacks as replacement parts so perhaps once you have determined which is the part that you need, (hopefully the part number is printed on the jack itself), if you do not wish to purchase it from them (and I am not recommending one way or the other that you do or don't -simply pointing it out) you can find it by "Googling" the part number ONLY to find other suppliers that may suit you better.

Here is the link.

I know this is an old question, but I have just had this problem too on my Dell Chromebook 11 (CB1C13). When plugging in the power cord, the light would come on for 1 or 2 seconds then go out again. It would not charge. I tried buying a genuine Dell replacement power supply and it made no difference. I then took the back off, disconnected the charging jack from the motherboard, gave the inside of the jack a good blast with compressed air and put it all back together again. Voila - the laptop is charging again! I can only think that some dust or fluff had got inside the jack, or maybe disconnecting and reseating it reset something.
