Why does my screen power out ( all black ) in the middle of using it?

Just recently my computers screen has been going black. I will be in the middle of typing or just listening to music when randomly (or so it seems) my screen will go black but the computer stays on. When this happens the only way for me to get it working again is to hold down the power button or restart it. And then it starts up just fine.. with the screen working. I want to know what part of the computer I'm having problems with and if it can be fixed.

As a first step I'd remove the battery entirely in order to make sure that AC power is definitely working. If it is, and the laptop behaves the same with the battery removed, then it's fair to say it's potentially a video issue, and then I agree the next step is to try external video in order to determine whether the problem is the chip, or the screen/cabling.

The reason I suggest removing the battery is that iBooks with near-dead batteries are notorious for leaving the machine in the state you described, i.e. needing to basically shut down and start up again in order to get the machine to wake up. If the AC is being flaky, then the whole problem could be that the laptop is at the mercy of a near-dead battery.

It sounds like the connection between the video card and the display, which runs through the hinges. Is there any change in the screen when you move the display around? If so, that is the likely culprit.

It might also be the display itself.

You can make sure it's not your graphics card by connecting an external display; if that works fine even when the built-in display goes black, then the graphics card is fine.
