Just replaced battery but not holding a charge.

I just purchased an ifixit replacement battery to exchange for the dead battery in my wife's iPhone 6. Out of the box it charged up and my wife used it. That night she did not plug it in (the connector she plugged her phone into was not connected to an actual charger.) Anyway, after hours of being plugged in, the phone indicated that it took a charge, was at 100% and powered on. She just yelled down to tell me that it has no power and has no charge - just the low battery indicator and the animation saying to plug it in. Is there some mistake I could have made during installation that it would only last for one cycle?

Did you charge the battery for 4 hours straight?

Yes sir. It was plugged in for almost 24 hours when the display turned on. It has now been plugged in for days

Reconnected the battery cable and has been plugged in since Sunday. Still not charging. Thank you all for your advice but at this point I'm just not sure what else can be done. I'm beyond I'd buy another 3rd party battery, but trying to explain to my wife "once your phone discharges to the point of shutting off means your battery will possibly need to be replaced again" is just a waste of breath.

I'll e-mail iFixit in just a moment to hopefully get a replacement battery.

Hello Gerald,

The iFixit replacement parts are usually pretty good. Normally they recommend that you drain the battery down to 10% and then recharge to 100% from that point. This is the calibration method that they describe as most effective. However if you find that the battery is still not holding a charge I suggest that you follow through with iFixit's warranty policy.

Another thing: You could check the connector in the iPhone 6 and make sure that the leads are absolutely clean. In the past I've used rubbing alcohol to clean rusted leads. Rust may not be the issue for you but perhaps this may help.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just checked the connection between the battery cable and the board and it came out really easily, as if maybe it weren't snapped on completely. I looked at it before reconnecting for any signs of rust or anything like that and it looks really clean. I reconnected everything and plugged it back in. Fingers crossed.

You really should never use "Rubbing alcohol" on electronics due to the fact that "Rubbing alcohol" is 70% alcohol and has minerals in it that will corrode electronics. You should really use isopropyl alcohol which is 90% or more alcohol and is better for the electronics.

Hello Gerald,

I'll echo the fact that iFixit supplies good quality parts. I would inquire about why an iPhone 6 would even need a battery replacement, it's too new. My question is whether or now your wife has ever used cheap charging cables? Non MFI certified cables do not contain an IC chip that regulates the voltage that enters the device. It is possible, with prolonged use, damage can occur to both the battery or the "Tristar" (U2) chip. A test of the input draw would tell us if it is a faulty battery or a U2. Must local shops will be able to test this for you. If it is the U2 all is not lost, there are several talented individuals that I know that are capable of that repair.

I wondered about the battery myself. When I opened the device I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to see a third party battery already in it. I did a google search for iPhone 6 battery issues before stumbling across this website and saw that this is apparently not an uncommon occurrence (batteries failing in less than or slightly over a year.) She only has OEM cables and chargers by the way.

I guess I forgot to mention, this device was purchased used on my initial post. So this is at least the third battery that's been in it.

You could purchase a defective iPhone 6 from eBay and use the battery from that device. Its worked for me in the past and most likely you are going to get an OEM version.

Good idea. I'll look into it, but am guessing even damaged devices sell for more than I'd like to spend.
