Is it safe to replace a swollen battery on my iPhone 5?

Apple has determined that my iPhone 5 has a swelling battery but will not replace it for free since it is over 3-1/2 years old. The swollen battery has separated the touch screen slightly but it still works perfectly. I saw this web site and I'm sure I can replace the battery but I'm concerned that there may be a safety issue since the current battery is swollen. Buying a battery will be a lot less expensive that paying the replacement cost of $269.

This is manufacturing defect and apple must support. It does not matter how old phone is. Under warranty or not. It is legal responsibility to correct apple iphone. You see how many car called back to fix issues...so apple must do it.

Can I remove the sticker of the battery so the air can be released?

I have the same problem. Not only is the battery defective, but they want to replace my phone because the battery damages the phone. The problem is they want me to pay for the battery ($79). Apple is very unethical!

I have replaced a few batteries on my old iPhone 5 and it is perfectly fine and super easy. It only cost me about $20 because I bought the kit too, which I would definitely recommend buying. Just be careful, go slow, and make sure it is only the iPhone 5. Anything above that gets MUCH more complicated. If you have Touch ID it is NOT the iPhone 5 and I would recommend watching a lot of videos before getting into it. If it has touch ID there s a cable running from the screen to the body of the phone, if you snap that cable you will have to replace the home button and will not be able to get Touch ID back. Only Apple can do that and they wont if you have opened the phone.

Thanks Mayer - So while I'm opening the case there's not a risk of piercing the battery and spewing acid?

完成的

celestewegner there is no acid in Li-Ion battery. They are alkaline and the electrolyte is not in liquid form. The swelling is most likely caused by overcharging (failure of the overcharge protection circuit in the battery). The gases (usually things like ethene, oxygen and hydrogen, all of which are flamable) are produced due to electrochemical oxidation of the electrolyte and cause the swelling. Avoid open flames and discard the battery properly. If you puncture the battery, you may release the gases but not a lot of spewing going on. Just use common sense.

You can smell to ethene coming of your iPhone's baterry right around your volume controll switches, at least with my iPhone, its discribed as a 'sweet and musky' odor.

if you smell that I would recomment replace your battery, you could do it yourself but be carefull as stated in the comment of oldturkey03. Or you can get it replaced, of course this is more expensive but better safe than sorry.

I think I'm going to replace it myself since I have some experience, I replaced it some time ago already. it quite simple and there are many sites and video's showing you step by step what to do if your new to repairing or replace parts in your iPhone.

Is ok to puncture the swollen battery (iphone) to release some of the gas then put some tape around it and use it again?? Is it dangerous?

The best option is to buy a wide flat plastic prying tool. iFixit should carry them. They are green or blue and look like a small wallpaper scraper. Open the iPhone 5 per an iFixit guide and heat the back of the phone slightly with a hair dryer. This will loosen the adhesive enough to make the prying easy. You basically use the plastic pry tool as a lever and the battery will come up with a couple of cranks. I've replaced tons of 5c batteries this way.

Yea to replace it you just need two screwdrivers and a plastic prying tool. Look up tutorials on YouTube and that should fix your issue. I do recommend that you do it soon though because swelling batteries tend to keep swelling and can crack your screen.

I went to Apple Store and they will give me a new phone but want to charge me $89.99 for a battery. They say my phone is old and no longer eligible for cost free replacement. I have IPhone 5s and bought it 3 years ago. I found youtube tutorial on how to replace battery. I ordered battery and tools on Amazon for $29.95 free shipping.

Absolutely replace it, just very careful not to puncture the battery in the process. The result of puncturing a lithium battery can be fire and/or explosion ... we're not concerned about mere leakage here. In my experience, if you're being careful and taking your time, it is relatively difficult to puncture the battery in practice, so don't stress about it but just be aware of what you are dealing with.

P.S. Don't throw the old battery in the garbage. It needs to be recycled properly.

The battery replacement is not a complicated repair. If you have a local repair shop seek out assistance just to be safe, You can replace it yourself but be very careful! With it being swollen the risks of damaging the battery increases. To do it safely follow these steps;

  • Once the screen been lifted, remove the two screws holding the battery connection in.
  • Very carefully, with a plastic pry tool, disconnect the battery connector.
  • If you can gently heat the phone behind the battery the adhesive will soften making it easier to remove.
  • Very carefully, with only plastic tools, lift the battery from it's adhesive. Be patient here, you don't want to bend the battery in the process.
  • Replace the battery with a fresh one remembering to replace the adhesive if needed.
  • Charge the new battery to 100% and then another hour.
  • Recycle the battery responsibly

Good luck
