Dell Inspiron 5500, Kills the Power Adapter

When I plug the power adapter to the laptop, the power adapter goes into a power fault state (green light on adapter goes off). To reset my adapter, I have to unplug the adapter cord from the computer and from the electrical outlet. Anyway, the Laptop will not power up. I suspect that something in the motherboard is broken. Any idea why?
