Temporary repair for s4 using s3 screen and digitiser

Is it possible to use the S3 screen and digitizer to temporarily repair the S4 due to a broken screen and digitizer?

I have a working S3 and a broken digitizer on my S4. I have data i wish to retrieve from the S4 but it is locked with a passcode and since the screen wont function i cannot input the code to unlock it. Therefore i thought i may be able to economise and use the S3 screen to unlock the S4 to get the data off it. I am not interested in salvaging the S4, i just want the data. Oh and it's an i9505 on the S4.

Hi,

Since your S4 still "works"(i.e. you can see the screen but the touch doesn't work-is that right?), you should be able to connect a mouse via an OTG cable (be sure to get the right one they are available on Ebay - look for OTG for Samsung S4) and use that to move around your screen and enter the passcode. Not certain how it goes with pattern locks though.

Once your phone is unlocked, quickly switch out the usb OTG cable to another pc to phone usb cable and connect it to a pc and see if the computer can see and access it. Locate the data you wish to get. As long as you can get in and start a transfer you will be ok, even if it locks the transfer will finish. You can also press the volume button to keep the screen active so you know it stays unlocked. Just keep an eye on a timer or something and remember that it usually locks (I think) after 60 seconds of no input.

Afraid not. Screen is completely black so can't see anything. The phone is still receiving calls and messages, but i can't answer them as the digitizer itself is broken. (I can see it's cracked). So, no touch and no image.

I tried connecting to the computer using kies but since it's locked i can't get it to connect. That's why i thought if the S3 had the same physical connection, even though in a different location on the digitizer, i may get past the lock screen and gain access.

I'm not trying to put it together to get a useable working phone, just to unlock it really. Thanks though.

Do not wish to labour the point, but thought this link has interesting info re your problem, if you have the time and inclination that is. One interesting method described was to connect a keyboard via OTG then key in the numbers to unlock. Anyway for what it is worth...

Thanks Jayeff. I feel a trip to Maplins is in order. I'll let you know if it works for me. I like the keyboard idea. Seems so simple.

Strangely, i can get it to work for the S3, but not for the S4. The connector still works as it can charge and connect to the computer (just can't access as locked). I've tried both mouse and keyboard options, but no luck! Guess what i really need is a shop to use a new screen to unlock the key lock on the phone and then give it back to me with the broken one. Not sure anyone would be open to that though.

Bad luck. Don't suppose you have a registered account with Samsung for your S4 ? Because according to this link you can remotely unlock your phone using their website - see method 3 http://joyofandroid.com/unlock-android-d...
