First here's the IFIXIT guide you should follow: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2390 Hard Drive Replacement.

Make sure the drive you get is able to run at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) which is the limit of this system. So far only Seagate makes a SSHD that works in this series Seagate SSHD. Review the data sheet here: Desktop SSHD.

You should also make sure the systems firmware is up to date before you start. Follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers

Most likely you'll need to address the thermal sensor issue as Apple used the internal drive sensor the manufactures used for diagnostics which use different contacts depending on the drive you currently have. The easiest way is to use this: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2009-2010 Hard Drive Upgrade or if you are lucky your current drive is a Seagate so it has the correct header for the new Seagate SSHD drive.

Did anyone attempt this yet? Does the Seagate Firecude SSHD have the correct pin out for the thermal sensor so it can read temps and not spin up to %100 fan? I’m debating buying it either way just to be safe? Also the safety data sheet for the Seagate SSHD is compatible way back to SATA 1.5. It’s definitely compatible. Do you need to enable trim? Or does the built in controller om the SSHD take care of all that?

One of my old 2011 iMac’s has been sitting with a dead HD for over a year. The other one I fixed by throwing an SSD into its disk drive using the kit from iFixit.

im thinking about going the 3.5” route for this one. Since all my hardware is disk drive free, It’s handy to have a computer that still uses one.
