I recently purchase a 2006 White Imac for $25.00, the Imac is beautiful and still working pretty good, but was wondering if there was a way to give it a little speed upgrade using an SSD; I am also interested of installing a second drive where the current Cd drive is located...is it possible? Anyone done such upgrade?

Your problem is backward compatibility to SATA I 1.5GHz per second.
I would go with a 3.5" hybrid drive. This one will work for you:
Seagate 1.0TB Desktop SSHD Solid State Hybrid Drive
ST1000DX001
This drive should be large enough so that you have no need to change out the optical drive.
