I have heard that it is bad to turn off your computers by holding the power button. I do it a lot because I don't like having to go to the menu and shut it down every time. Is there a real drawback to me doing this?

You do not want to shut down your computer by just holding down the power button. They have a shutdown option because there are many steps that Windows takes to shut down the computer. Normally, computers will check for problems in their system files while they go through the shut down process. Eventually, your system files may become corrupted which will lead to bigger problems and possibly having to wipe your computer altogether.

It’s not good for the hard drive, but if you have a hard lockup and need to do it in an emergency it doesn’t hurt anything - generally.
The issue with hard drives is primarily if you do it too often - yes, it can damage the drive and shorten it’s lifespan. Sure, doing it once in a while won’t hurt anything, but it does put the OS at risk for corruption.
In terms of the risk it depends… DOS-9X/ME is easily damaged, but the NT based versions like NT4 and XP-present tend to survive against it better.

Well it depends on your hardware. Back then, in the previous millennial, without the technology we have now, people were trained not to because on older PCs, they didn’t send a signal telling them to shut down, causing corrupt files and damaging the system. Now, newer PCs send a signal to save and close files properly and shut down. It really depends if you have Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows 10, that kind of stuff.

1- It can lead to loss of data that was currently in session
2 - it can lead to file system corruption
3- The Os may no longer boot bcz the registery has become corrupt
4- The HDD might have physical damage due to short circuit that may lead to replacement

If you momentarily press the power button, it is like selecting "Shut Down".
If you press and hold the power button, it is a "Hard" Shut down and will turn off the computer without closing files/apps like a regular shut down does. This can corrupt files and potentially damage your computer.

I have an older pc and I've been trying to find some answers. I had this Christmas decoration that plugged into a USB port so I had it plugged into my computer. Today I wanted to use my computer so I used my mouse to try to get the monitor on and it wouldn't come on. ( Stupid me it wasn't turned on) so I decided to shut the computer off and turn it back on. I did so but now all it does is peep a few times then the fan comes on and stays on and the screen remains black. It's done that before every time I turn it off by the power button. How can I get it back on

Mine doesn't always shutdown properly so I have to do it. Sometimes it even restarts after I shut it down and sometimes if I put it in sleep it wakes up by itself
