HDD replacement for a normal SSD

In regards to HDD, can't just the stock one be unplugged and normal SSD plugged instead of it? Rather then soldering on a PCIE slot, which are a pain to find.

Reason for asking is that in great Eastern Europe, there are no Fusion drive options, we have to roll with 8gb and stock 1TB sloDRIVE.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can replace the HD with a 2.5" SSD. You need to make sure it supports TRIM for better performance.

Thanks! I gave the iMac back, it was total rubbish with the HDD. My MBP takes 1 second to open settings, iMac took 11 :) Not the performance I paid near 2k euro for.

Make sure you follow this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2805 Hard Drive Replacement. I must warn you if you don't follow the instructions and fail to use the correct tools here you can damage the display assembly! Also review the IFIXIT iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display Teardown as there are a few differences.

You may want to go to Western Europe to pickup your system if you haven't bought it yet. Once you swap out the drive you will effectively loose your warranty for the system.

Can you let me know what changes are required to do this on a iMac Intel 21.5" Retina (late 2015) model?

@ Gautam - You'll need to follow the links in my posting just above here on whats involved. I don't recommend doing this as you risk damaging your system. Lastly, the performance of the blade SSD is much faster than the SATA III interface so while you do again some improvement in speed with the 2.5" SSD in truth you'll get more with the Apple M.2 blade drive. Given everything I would just bite the bullet and just buy the model with the SSD already installed.

Don't even try it.

I had a 27" model and to save a few hundred bucks I was going to buy a 500GB SSD to install myself. The repair itself is super risky, removing the screen causes cosmetic problems around the edges (the black gets scrapped off and it looks scratched), removing the screen without breaking a cable is also tricky.

I would just pay the extra for the SSD model.

Does anybody knows if you the original drive has an internal temp-sensor (so if replaced by an SSD you must install SSD-FanControl as well) ?

Or does a SSD just works without stressing the fan?

Yes, you can install a 2.5" SSD replacing your 2.5" HD drive. You don't need any fan control software (nor do I recommend it). The issue people faced was only with the 3.5" drives used in the older 21.5" as well as the 27" series.

I must warn you you need to use the correct tools and extra care when taking off the display assembly as many people damage it just in taking it off! Which can be a very expensive mistake.
