Keyboard problem - SHIFT key always on

The keyboard functions as if the SHIFT key is always on.

For instance impossible to type numbers, only the upper keys ! @ # $ % ....

Also, other keys give the wrong input. But an external keyboard works just fine.

Is there any way to fix the keyboard or to replace it?

Thanks for the help.

Update (09/27/2015)

thanks a lot for your help.

This is not my computer, but I dont think there was anything spilled in it.

the problem for instance is that it starts only on safe mode, as the shift key is always on.

I would like to try to disconnect the keyboard and work with an external keyboard. Is it easy to disconnect the keyboard?

thanks again, Serge

Update (09/29/2015)

yes, I tried that and it works. The catch to start from the normal keyboard, I have to start with command V (verbose) or with the option key. Otherwise it starts in Safe boot as the shift key is always on. with the option key on, it does not bring the list of start up drives. with the option +command + P+R it starts from the recovery partition.

My next question: Could it be just the cable of the keyboard? is it a big deal to change that? expensive?

thanks,

serge

The rub here is disconnecting the keyboard also disconnects the system power switch as well ;-{ So that won't work for day to day use. If you want to test the system you can pop the connection and then jump the power pads if you have a USB keyboard & mouse connected.

The keyboard is a bunch of switches which are normally off (disconnected). So in your case the the uppercase line is shorted. This is a switch issue not the ribbon cable or corrosion at the conectors. I don't see replacing the cable alone would make a difference. You'll need to open the system up to inspect things to make sure.

Did you spill something into the keyboard? It sounds like you have a damaged keyboard.

Sadly, this is a big repair. You'll need to take the system almost completely apart. Here's the IFIXIT guide to follow: MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 Upper Case Replacement. Then you'll need to replace the upper case with a new unit. While some have managed to replace the keyboard alone this one is riveted in so its really hard to take out without breaking the rivets, besides Apple doesn't offer the keyboard alone.

I also have this issue and am wondering how I can boot the computer without going into safe mode since the shift key seems to be stuck (although intermittently). I have an external keyboard, which helps when the computer is up and running, but it doesnt keep it from booting into safe mode. Is there an additional key that I can push to allow it to boot into regular mode?

@billguppy - You do have a second shift key, is it not working as well? If that's the case then your keyboard switch is shorting out so it can't sense the value (High to Low, as its already in the low state). Time for a new keyboard ;-{
