How to open the case for HUMAX RM-F01 Remote control to the iHDR-5050?

The remote control has gathered dirt which has led to keys that need quite a lot of force to be activated. I'd like to clean it up, but I simply cannot open the case. There are no screws, no clips, nothing. The battery compartment doesn't reveal anything either. It looks and feels as if it has been glued together, but that doesn't make sense.

I'd appreciate help with this.

TIA Vince

Thank you very much, I managed to clean out both of our remotes, following your advice. It did take a bit of brute force, but it has saved me buying a third replacement remote. Yours gratefully, Mike

Thanks very much for the information. I too used brute; case is rough round the edges, so sandpaper next!

I have just opened my Humax RM-F01, cleaned the keypad and re-assembled it.

I first removed the batteries for safety. The top and bottom are totally separate (no wires) when they come apart. There were no screws holding this remote together

I inserted the tip of the small blade of a Swiss Army Knife into the seam that runs all around the remote 3mm from the top. I started about 90mm from the IR transmitter (between two lugs) and gently eased along the seam towards the middle of the remote, pushing out the side slightly and levering up the top, until the first lug popped out of its slot halfway along. I then carried on with this technique until all 14 lugs were popped. I found it easier to pop the end lugs after all the side lugs were freed. None broke and very little force was needed. The lugs are symmetrical each side and are positioned as follows starting from the IR end (top): 20mm, 65mm, 115mm (centre), 165mm and 210mm - each measurement to approximately the centre of the lug. There are two lugs on the bottom 15mm from each corner and two at the IR end 10mm from each corner.

Once all the lugs were popped the keyboard complete with circuit-board lifts off the housing and there are no connecting wires. To remove the circuit board there are 4 plastic lugs. I eased the board from underneath the bottom two (one at a time) and it came easily away from the top two. The buttons are all on a single rubber sheet which lifts off and can be cleaned by washing in warm water with a drop of fairy liquid. Rinse thoroughly in clean water (preferably de-ionised) and thoroughly dry before re-assembly. Ensure the loop of springy wire connecting the batteries is still in place in the housing before re-assembly. It is easier to engage the top and bottom lugs before the side lugs are clipped as there is more give in the sides.

The RM-F01 is supplied with the Humax FoxSat-HDR Freesat+ recorder. This technique also works with the Humax RM-F04 remote control that is supplied with the HDR-Fox T2 Freeview+ recorder.

I've had luck opening various remotes by running my thumb fingernail around the seam and gently prying more and more until it pops apart. But first do open the battery compartment and check it carefully for screws. Feel any labels for a hole under them, indicating a possible hiding place for a screw.

Your typical remote uses plastic clips molded into the body to hold the top and bottom halves together. Sometimes, you might need to push in either the top or bottom edge along the seam to help pop the clips apart.

By the way, once you get it open, you might find out that just cleaning doesn't really help the problem (sometimes it does). Many remotes have rubber buttons that are impregnated with carbon on the bottom to act as a switch as it pushes against the circuit board pads. Sometimes the carbon just comes off over time. I've seen a remote repair kit for sale which contains something that you paint on to the bottom of the buttons. I've used conductive ink to good effect as well. Once I tried putting little pieces of aluminum foil under the buttons, but they didn't tend to stick on very well.

I followed Philip Bradbury's method and it worked perfectly, without any lugs broken. It took me about 1/4hour in all to do - don't be scared to try it - you shouldn't to force it off.

I used cotton buds and methylated spirit to clean the printed circuit board. Ensure the chrome ring is reset correctly at NSEW positions and that the battery springs are in the right place.

Hope this helps someone else!

This works a treat but just take care. I ran a sharp knife around the groove to get rid of some of the accumulated dirt first and this seemed to make it easy to get the knife in. Start in the middle and work carefully upwards and downwards. Do both sides before you try the ends. The only tricky bit is springing it out at the end but it seems quite robust. You have to unclip the circuit board and slide it out but this is OK. Don't break the clips and watch out for the coiled battery terminals. Make sure you dry thoroughly before refitting. I used super absorbing kitchen roll. Locate all the parts back as they were and push fit. It took about half an hour with drying but it works better than ever.

My Humax remote 'OK' button was not working 8 times out of 10.

Remove the batteries before starting.

I used a very small kitchen knife to open my remote control, just easing it around the middle section until one of the lugs popped open. Then just move the knife around carefully, prising the front from the back until each lug pops open. Take extra care at the ends as these are the tightest fit (one lug snapped on mine, but the case is so tight when closed it didn't make any difference when snapped shut)

Once open, carefully remove the circuit board (mine had 2 small lugs holding it near the battery end which can be carefully prised apart)

I cleaned the rubber pad with some 'Sticky Stuff Remover' (available from Betterware and others) on a clean kitchen towel. You will find it all clips back into place very easily, and it now functions perfectly!

Just done this myself and the OK button is working again. You can expect some minor cosmetic damage but what use is a pristine remote that doesn't work?

Thanks for the advice.

Luckily id got a pressurised air cannister for cleaning cameras so avoided liquids and used air instead.

Brilliant.

I'd like to say one huge great thank you to Philip Bradbury. My Humax remote's OK button stopped working last week and a cheaper all purpose remote didn't work to recover my recorded programs. I'm a 66 yr old female techno-phobe but decided to try and follow Philip's advice. It has worked! Brill!!! I used a blunt kitchen knife to open the case as he recommended and washed the buttons. I rubbed the contact for the OK button with an eraser as it was quite black compared to the others. I can't express my gratitude enough.

I was very pleased when I first took it apart, washed the rubber and successfully re-assembled it. The remote worked as well as it had when it was new. However, after a few months it was working poorly again.

I have taken it apart (surely it should have been easier the second time?) cleaned everything I could see, and tried the eraser as well. I've now put it back together (twice - as the first time I left out the metal wheel) and am hoping that this time it keeps going for longer, otherwise I may have to resort to buying a replacement.

To walker13d

I have found that the batteries sometimes fail to make contact properly and either removing and replacing (the same batteries) , or (easier) rotating them in place with your thumb corrects this.

I think it may be oxidising on the surface of the contacts/battery that is the cause - whatever, it has always worked for me and is worth a try before you buy

I failed to get the case on my Humax RM-F01 open without causing damage, but dropping some lighter fluid around my sticking up/down/left/right and OK button and then manipulating them repeatedly freed them up - much easier! :)

Great advice!

I found that plastic Gap Openers are very good for opening these units up. These Gap Openers are small plastic blades that may be used to prise casings apart without damage, they often come free with equipment such as car dashboard mountings, or can be bought cheaply on the internet, often as part of an "Ipod Opening Toolkit".

When it comes to cleanint the circuit board, I've used a good quality eraser with excellent results. Just make sure you keep the eraser clean throughout the exercise and be sure to blow/vacuum any any eraser particles off the circuit board before reassembly.

Very useful info. I did break a few small bits of plastic but nothing to worry about. I cleaned the "contacts" on the printed circuit board with alcohol and soaked the rubber bit in warm water and washing up liquid for 30 minutes and then dried it all off before re-assembly. Works great now, like new.

Update

Although cleaning the contacts helped for a while the success was short lived and the remote died altogether after another couple of weeks. I bought a third party remote called RM Series RMC10330 which works perfectly and threw the original away.

Worked for me too although I couldn't actually see any dirt. I wiped the circuit board with a small amount of carbon tet as I didn't have any alcohol to hand.

Many thanks for the post.

Having bought a replacement Remote, as the original was hit and miss after 7 years wear, the brand new replacement fails to initialise to the TV or DVD!!

The help here gave me back my remote 'as new'. Carried out all the advice, and dried with a hair drier on 'medium' heat. Perfect!

May help? TO CHANGE IR MODE on HUMAX REMOTES

From Hummy.org.uk site, now suspended: Originally posted by Barry

1. Switch on your TV set and the Humax product that you wish to change the remote code.

2. Make sure that other Humax products are powered OFF at the mains.

3. Point the remote control towards the remote control sensor of the target receiver.

4. Press and hold the 0 and OK buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds until the PVR button on the remote stays red.

It is important that a full uninterrupted 5 seconds is transmitted. Check for dirty buttons by pressing each separately and noting if the PVR light is flickering - it should be solid. If the buttons are dirty follow my cleaning instructions on ifixit .

5. A message will appear on the TV screen:

"You can change the remote control mode.

Press a Numeric Key (<1> ~ <6>) to select the mode

Current mode: Mode 1."

6. Press a NUMERIC button (from 1 to 6) to select a different mode.

7. A message confirming the change of Mode will appear on screen.

After putting in storage for over a year after getting SKY I have now hooked it up and had difficulties with media, guide, exit and back buttons. Took unit apart and gave all circuit board areas a wipe over with cotton buds dipped in after shave (closest thing I had to alcohol). Working perfect now. Hope it lasts. Great Forum…
