They aren't the same battery no, they have the same connector, but the 5S has a bigger mAh.
iPhone 5C - 1510 mAh
iPhone 5S - 1560 mAh
Besides that, there has been cases where swapping the battery for the other model would cause reboots, this is due to an update, stick to using the original battery. :-)

NO THEY AREN'T THE SAME and someone that says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.
Do they fit interchangeably? Yep, they sure do but this is a cell phone, not a USPS flat rate box. "If it fits, it ships" does not apply.
The opposite battery in the device causes problems on bootup on some of the iOS versions, it doesn't always cause problems, doesn't always come back to your shop for the problem so you THINK its fine, but especially if you're calling yourself a professional and charging people money for this work, PUT THE RIGHT FREAKING BATTERY IN THE PHONE.
