New 8TB ,HDD installed: continuing error "internal disk needs repair"

I've replaced the failed 3TB HDD(SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache ) with a model number (ST3000DM001) in my TC (A1470) with a 8TB HDD (from HGST model no HUH728080ALN600). I've used the Airport Utility to try and set it up but keep getting the error "internal disk needs repair". I've tried soft, hard and factory default resets, but neither Finder or Disk Utility 'sees' the TC.The OS on my iMac is 10.10.4.

The Wireless connection works fine .

The speeds are the same for both the HDD's.

The detailed specifications of the HGST drive is as below:

DRIVE PERFORMANCE :

INTERFACE TRANSFER RATE : 600 MBPS

SUSTAINED TRANSFER RATE : 205 MBPS

SEEK TIME (READ, TYPICAL) : 8.5 MS

AVERAGE LATENCY : 4.16 MS

BUFFER : 128 MB

ROTATIONAL SPEED : 7200 RPM

here is the link to other detailed specs http://www.hgst.com/hard-drives/enterpri...

Please need suggestions and advice. thanks

@Varun - I'm not sure if the HGST UltraStar He8 drive will work here.

Looking at the specs it is a slow drive intended for a enterprise backup server (yes, I know a TC is a backup server) and its also very large! 8TB. The OS on the TC is not OS-X but a custom OS for the TC. I'm not sure it can handle this big a drive as well.

You see the enterprise servers are designed to cache the data then write it. The TC on the other hand is an entry level unit with very little cache. Did you reach out the HGST to see if they have qualified it? Here's the current tested setups: HGST Compatibility summary.

As to the TC's OS it would need a file system that could support this large a drive. As Apple hasn't offered anything close to this size its possible the AirPort Utility via the builtin TC OS can't handle it. You may want to check both the AirPort Utility & the TC firmware levels to see if they are the latest. You also could give Apple a call or message the support group to see what they say. You may need to push it up the support group hierarchy to get a good answer. I would ask them what is the largest drive the TC's OS can support. They may not offer a good answer here.

At this point I think your best bet here is to put the drive in its own external drive case and use it that way.

I had this same problem upgrading to a WD Green 6TB. Here was my scenario. If it's close to yours then it should work.

1. Used iPhone "AirPort Utility" app to try the repair. No luck. Tried removing/reseating about 6 times. I thought I wasted $200.

2. Installed Windows "AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows" Apple Website

3. Performed Repair Disk. Bingo. Done. Enjoy.

Honestly I can't remember if the button is Repair or Delete or even something else. But you only have one option...

This was the solution for me, too - The IPhone App seems to be not fully functional for HDD replacements or if you wiped your HDD before wanting to sell the device

First try hooking the drive up using a USB cable to your Mac. Remove the drive and use a universal adapter or external USB enclosure. Run Disk Utilities and format the Drive GUID and Mac Extended. If error occur format using the "write zeros" option.

I can see the Airport Disk option in Disks option under Airport Utility now , unlike before this option was absent , I am trying to erase the disk by writing all zeroes to the disk , hopefully this should take care of the Issue . Will update what happens next . Is there anything else I must take care off or be aware about please let me know.

Yes that cable will work. This is starting to sound like a bad hard drive. Is it still covered under AppleCare? If not, after you have removed the drive and tried the reformat with the external cable and failed, it will have to be replaced.

After writing the zeroes to the 8TB HDD from my MBP and after fixing it back on my TC, I am able to find it as a free disk on my airport utility but still unable to find to for usage on my Time Machine Application.

I also performed a Factory Default reset and tried to connect and use on my Time Machine Application ,yet not able to find anything there. Am I missing something here , Please help me out guys. Thanks
