How to load OS on new hard drive with no disc's

iMac 24 2.8GHz Early 2008

I purchased a iMac 24" EMC2211 from a friend's sister. The hard drive was bad and they had it removed, so I don't have the original hard drive or the drive bracket. The machine comes on and the screen comes on and goes to the folder with a question mark and I can hear the dvd drive at startup as well. I also hear the bong so the sound works. I would like to install a new hard drive and use this machine for my kids. The problem is I don't have any of the original discs or a backup, nothing. What do I need to do to get this thing going?

I do have the apple disk that came with my wife's Macbook Pro which had Snow Leopard on it. Is it possible to use that disk to load the operating system, or do I need a new copy for this computer?

The gray disks are machine specific or series specific. The MacBook Pro disk most likely will not work at all on an iMac. You may however be able to boot the iMac in Target mode and use Disk Utilities to repair the old drive, format a new drive and/or clone your current operating system onto the iMac. I don't have the original hard drive for the iMac. It was removed before I got the machine. I will have to buy a new hd drive for it, I just wasn't sure how to go about loading the OS, that is why I posted originally. Thanks for all your help.

As long as you are buying a new hard drive, upgrade the machine cheaply by getting a hybrid drive. The Seagate SSHD drives are good. You can get it in a 1, 2 or 4 TB edition. Here's the 1: 1 TB SSD Hybrid 3.5" Hard Drive
