I gave mine a good whack it worked!!

I tapped the sides right around the power button (but not too hard because that's very close to the camera) and all of a sudden the power button started responding again. I still have to press it in a certain way and direction for it to work, but that's better than nothing. Thanks!!

@barb.barker1 thanks for your comment. I can't believe it, but it works now!

Worked for me as well. Might have been the cause as well since I dropped it and that is what made it freeze. Interested to know what is making this work.

There seems to be an answer here....

I reset my Kindle 3 times, (full factory), and presto, the power button is now working... I was ready to take it apart... Thanks Steve!

Partial disassemble + tightening 2 black screws at the bottom (4:19 in the video) solved problem for me.

Neither resetting a bunch nor just tightening those screws worked for me, but I disassembled a bit more and my button starting working again.

Just as an FYI, i had a paperwhite that was "dead" for years and I finked around with it (because i always noticed plugging it in brought on a charge light). After following some instructions elsewhere about copying an empty file named "DO_FACTORY_RESTORE" into the root of the device for the 5 seconds I could access it via a PC I got it to restore... I then had to manually download the updates as it kept saying it couldn't register or update. I did that and then found the power button wouldn't work.... I tried smacking it around a few times and was about to take it apart however i tried sliding my finger nail (i have long thin hard nails) into the top and bottom right about and below the button and jiggled it a little (not too hard)... it popped on and now the power button is working fine! thx for the other tips as they gave me the notion that it might just need to be moved a little to start working again!

Cheers and good luck to anyone else working on their kindles!

On the off chance anyone else still has one of these in 2018, I had this same problem with a non-working power button. I verified the Kindle worked fine by removing and replacing the battery (it rebooted as expected).

I then had to fully disassemble it to start playing around with the power button. I noticed it worked, but only if I squeezed on the right side (screen facing up) of the USB micro input. I tried screwing down as hard as I felt comfortable on the two screws either side of the home button. Still, the power button only worked intermittently. I deduced it needed more pressure for whatever contact is between the switch and motherboard. So, I added the nearest spacer I could find: I peeled off one of the rubber pads from the inside of the back cover, cut it in half, then placed both halves just below the screw on the right side. I reassembled everything and voila, this old clunky e-reader is still chugging along.

I didn't investigate the actual cause of the problem since I was too lazy to remove the motherboard. But I'm okay with a little mystery.

In my case squeezing or pushing on the bezel above the power button did make the power button responsive. So solving the problem is definitely about some pressure/tightening in the area of the button.

Thanks to all of you for this great device saving hint!

Connected the cord to my Mac, Kindle showed up and screen lit up and said to eject device if want to continue reading. I ejected and the screen and all the books came on. Power switch still would not work. Could not reset because power button did not work. After reading about disassembling, that idea was not for me, so I smacked it near the bottom bezel and the power button is working fine now. Sometimes the old fashioned remedies are the best.

Both buttons on my Kindle touch weren’t working any more. Slamming didn't help. So I disassembled it following the guide on powerbookmedic, to the point where I could remove the frame. Not difficult at all to get to that point. Them some wd40 contact spray on both buttons, reasssembled it and now everything works like new, ready for the next decade ;-)

I dropped my kindle, and although it would charge it would not respond to any other input. I suspected a software issue rather than hardware issue. So I followed the instructions in the video above and removed the battery. After a minute or so I replaced the battery and the kindle restarted itself and after it finished rebooting the problem seems to have resolved itself.
