short lived CFl (6 months all over the house)
We have had several compact fluorescent bulbs burn out only after about 6 months of use at this time in every place we have used them in the house.
6 month is short - but possible.
the "starter" inside the bulb dies first - the more often you switch dem on, the faster they die - i had once a cfl bulb that was always on, i only switched it off 6 times in 7 years - another one was switched with a motion sensor - this one died after a few month

CFL life is (or should be) measured in startup events, rather than by time. If you are constantly turning it on and off, it will have a much shorter lifespan.
Once a CFL has started, it takes very little power to keep it going. As a general rule, if you leave a room lit by a CFL and expect to return in one hour or less, leave the light on.
As Markus suggested, check the voltage level. Some utilities provide higher voltage than is really required, and that may cause appliances to fail prematurely. In the U.S., your power should be at 110 volts to 125 volts. I believe this is correct for Canada also.

cfl bulbs used upside down, such as in a ceiling fixture, significantly reduce their life because of the heat which rises up and causes overheating of the components in the electronic circuit enclosed in the base. I've gone back to incandescent bulbs for that type of use.

Is your light fitting in a recessed ceiling fixture? I have found that too high a wattage causes overheating and an early death. This is more noticeable in the cheaper brands.
