How to fix "slide to power off" screen that randomly shows up?

I dropped my phone on the first step of a pool and immediately picked it up after dropping it. I wasn't aware I should turn the phone off, so I just shook out the water, kept using it and put it on a charger... I know now that was not the correct steps. About an hour after dropping it I put it in a box of rice for a couple hours while still charging it. Then continued to use it for the rest of the night. It's now been 15 days since the water damage and I haven't tried to fix anything on the phone.

My phone works almost perfectly, battery stays charged, connects to itunes, speakers work perfectly, screen lighting perfect headphone jack works, microphone works, fingerprint works, etc. The only part that has problems is the power button, sometimes it doesn't work. It's very sporadic, I can go hours with it working fine, then other times it will be glitchy and take screenshots every time I try to use the home button. When the power button isn't working, a black screen also pops up (at it's worst times about every minute). All it says is slide to power off at the top with a toggle and at the bottom there's an x (cancel button). Most the time I just hit the cancel button and hope my phones not in the mood to keep asking me to turn it off every minute. When this is happening with my phone I can't use the power button to turn it off, but I can use the screen that shows up randomly to turn off the phone. Then once the phone is off the power button always works and lets me turn the phone back on, but once the phones back on it's completely random if the power button starts working again.

I've tried searching answers for this and I haven't been able to find anything on it. Anyone know what I should do?

I have the same problem and mine has never been exposed to water. Spent two days with apple support but they were clueless and kept getting me to reprogram it and use my backups from iCloud and my computer.

It's a virus in my opinion or a hardware problem. My issue still has not been resolved.

I have the same problem except its never been exposed to water. I feel like it started when i did the last update 9.3....

My iPhone 6 Plus does the same thing, and I have no idea why. During writing this response, the black screen has come up 3 times and made me re log in. It is so frustrating and I have no idea what is happening

完成的

Mine fell down and as I am writing this comment, it has popped up more than 5 times

Same here since the last update... never been in contact with water nor dropped... really annoying and resetting the settings didn't help.

Paige, Rice will do very little/nothing in helping a phone that has experienced liquid/water damage. Stop charging or powering up your device until the liquid damage is addressed correctly, as you could be shorting out components inside the phone. You really should take care of the corrosion that is happening inside the phone from the water damage as that could be your problem. A tear down link for your device Link #1, disassembly guide will enable you to get inside the phone to remove the damage/corrosion caused by the liquid. Use the 2nd/3rd link as a guide/instruction on how to clean/repair the device from liquid damage. After this you will be able to power on the phone and see if further damage has to be addressed. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

I have an iPhone 5, but it was having a similar problem to many of those mentioned here for the past day seemingly out of nowhere. I went to settings > general > reset > reset all settings. My phone has been working perfectly since, no unwanted screenshots and no slide to power off screens that I have to exit out of. Hope this helps!

After many things I tried on my iphone 6 plus I decided to open up the phone myself and slid a small piece of paper at the back of the power button and voila no more bugging from this silly bug. Probably a small piece of pin from the power button was touching with the mainboard of the phone triggering the switch. This piece of paper just did the trick preventing the pins from touching the mainboard. The power button works properly even with this piece of paper.

In my opinion you should give it a go and saving loads of money for a fix if your phone's warranty has expired.

Tried this, and it worked perfectly! Thanx for writing this!

The "slide to power off" screen had gone crazy on my iphone 5c, showing up like 40 -50 times each day. But all it took was as small piece of paper behind the button. Saves a lot of money as well as frustration :)

Mine started doing this after being in my pocket while I was in the rain. I tried the rice thing for a day or two and it didn't work. The problem actually got worse over time and it became really difficult to use the phone. Anyway I took the phone apart to look for signs of damage. There was a small amount of rust on one of the screws near the power button but nothing else was visibly wrong. I did notice that even though the phone was powered off the logic board was hot to the touch in the same area. I then unplugged the battery from the logic board. Then proceeded to tear the phone down. I removed the logic board and then the power button frame. Didn't see anything wrong so I reassembled the phone after wiping everything clean with a q-tip. After reassembly the problem was gone.

Don't know if you need to take it as far as I did since I didn't find a smoking gun. I'd start with disconnecting the battery from the logic board for a little while and see if it takes care of the problem.

I had the same problem. I have an iPhone 6+. I reset the iPhone then set it back to factory setting, nothing helped. I made an appointment with the Apple Store and they replaced my phone it was still under warranty. I also had no water damage and had not dropped or damaged my phone in anyway.

I had the same problem with an iPad mini. I did the update iOS and reset to factory settings but to no avail the slide to power off still showing up. But one trick get rid of it though, I slide the button on top of the volume up button on the the right side of the iPad and ever since the slide to power off button did not show up again. Hope this helps.

I believe it's an hardware problem cause from the comment, it's mimics a hold down press on the switch button which happens when there is a form of bridge. I hope it helps.

I created another post with the resolution of this problem.

The flat cable and the touch screen were in some sort of bridge.

My old flat cable was scratched,

The first measure was replace the broken display ( just remembering that the switch button fault was prior to the broken display) and the random press was gone.

The repair service recommended replacing the flat cable but it was out of stock.

The original problem was solved.

If this is happening to your ipad and you have it in a case, try rotating the case. Chances are it's bumping up against the shut off button. Worked for me

i would open it up firstly and disconnect the power cable. isolate the connector with some black electrical tape . then give it a trial run for a day and see if the same symptons are there. if not then go back and change the power flex

I had the same problem with my Iphone 5C after it was dropped. Reset back to factory setting didnt worked. It was some hardware problem actually. My phone was already 2 years old, out of warranty . So i got it checked by a local repair shop and the repair guy changed the strip for power button. Costed like 15$ and its all fine now)

I have this problem, but might have a solution. If you look at the lock button and make sure it's not lopsided and is even. If it's lopsided I'm pretty sure it will try to opt you turn your phone off.

Okay I have fixed my phone!!! My phone has been locking its screen and taking screenshots 26 times a second.

I have recently reset all settings and then deleted a bunch of photos and videos and voila, new phone! Good luck. Just check yours phone memory storage and see it's not full, if it is - delete some things and see if that helps.

Cheers!

I had this same problem with my phone I fell in the pool with it in my pocket and I pulled it out right as it hit the water and the shut down button was the only thing wrong with it, if you happen to see this before you drop your phone in the water just take of the case, take out the SIM card and put it in a warm place, but if not this is what I did, I took my iPhone 6s and took out the screw on the bottom of the phone with a tiny screwdriver and then took out the SIM card and took out the screen just a little bit it is really hard to take it off without the right tools so I used a pin to dig under the screen and the pull it out a little bit and then I set the phone under a heat lamp overnight with the side that is partly taken off pointing up towards the heat lamp after this process I woke up and my phone was back to normal, hope this helped

The problem is that you may have dropped your mobile device multiple times. I've dropped mine and I am pretty sure the buttons were just moved arround, causing the phone to malfunction. An easy but not always working way is to reboot your phone. Simply hold the power button and the home button to reboot. If this does not work, try asking a apple employee to conpletely dismantle your phone and tebuold it. Or you can just upgrade your phone.

I think power button is damaged from the water, you need to replace with new parts or otherwise you can manage from "AssistiveTouch" and "Home button".

Mine didn't get wet. I guess the problem was that the button was a little loose (even though it didn't seem like). I placed a small piece of folded paper in the case (where the power button goes) then I inserted my phone into the case. Solved.

Guys,

I had the same sort of problem but it came without water damage or dropping the phone (iPhone SE).

In my case, the inside of my silicon case was very dirty. Basically so much dirt accumulated above the power button that with its thickness it was enough to push down the button to an extent that it caused this power-off screen issue.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone from here would have the same issue.

My theory is if you drop it in water (assuming that the inside of the phone has dried out and there isn’t any malfunction due to water ingress) the dirt between your phone and case can “swell” pushing down the button.

Anyway, hope this helped.

I have an iPad 2 which is cracked from the top left hand side near the lock button, I didn’t drop it in water it just cracked while it fell, now it randomly prompts me for slide to power off without me holding the button, also it takes random screenshots without me touching the home and lock screen button. Should I replace my screen?
