Is my HDD fan broken?

iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 and 2118 Model A 1207

I have this 20" older Imac (2006 edition) sitting on my counter for maybe 2 months with the power on. It may have gone to sleep mode or not, but the screen was off.

So, just today I try to start working with it, but it will just not turn on.

Mouse movements and keyboard strokes do not wake it up. Pressing the power button will not reboot it.

Nothing happens: screen is black and there is no fan humming or even HDD sound. Nothing.

I opened the body and as I am looking at the diagnostic LED, it is always green.

The HDD fan does not spin, but when I hit the power button, the fan moves about 1/8" and stops. It kind of jerks once and gives up. Nothing else happens.

That is the end of this performance.....

My best guess is that the HDD fan is broken.

What do you think? Should I just order a new one and try to change it, or might there be a bigger problem?

Changing the HDD fan is pretty cumbersome, but doable.

Before I start doing this, I would like to get your opinion though.

Since only one Green LED is on I thought that the power supply is working (it does make the HDD fan "twitch"), but your answer makes sense.

The LED is constantly on, and will only turn off for a second when I press the Power Button.

I will try to change the power supply.

Thanks.

Getting just one green LED shows you have trickle power to the power supply. If the machine is not booting and you get no other LEDs your power supply has failed. Of course the fan does not run, it's not getting enough power. Replace the power supply. Here's how: iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 and 2118 Power Supply Replacement
