New games won't play

My son has been given some games for his Ps2. They were second hand but they are in absolutely mint condition with no scratches. They will load but it comes up with a red screen and says not formatted for ps2.they are in ps2 official game cases and have ps2 logo on the disk. He's devistated!!! Help!
