How can I get the external display to work?
My display blinked occasionally then died completely. I have a monitor and a cable but when I connect it I get a dim lit blur. What can I do to use an external display?

I suspect your problem is not the display its self but the graphics card.
Can you describe what you where doing just before you lost the image.

It occurred after I allowed the computer to sleep. I have found that after shutting the imac down for a day and restarting. I have the screen back and was able to get an external monitor working also. I think it may be a heat problem.
Sounds like you'll need to redo the thermal paste on the graphics card & CPU. I also suspect you have a very dusty system and need a though cleaning.
