Backlight not working on display; works on external display

I have the exact same computer and issue as Alexia Soria (August 12, 2013). I have followed your recommended steps up to #9 (replace inverter board), but the recommended part number (922-8280) is for the A1181, not the A1278, according to the vendor. Do I even have an inverter board? Macbook S/N W8906UEV1AQ.

Frustrated. Been without my macbook for 3 months. Replaced LCD and LCD cable (3 times!) Can you help?

Update

Can't seem to free the logic board from the hinge area. Rubber capped wire won't release.

Is the backlight fuse anywhere on the top of the board by chance?

Update

Never mind. I found it! Now, how do I test the fuse and/or replace it? It's sooooo small.

Hi Melinda,

This sounds like a motherboard problem. This can be fun to troubleshoot if you're up for it. Are you handy with a multimeter?

Thanks olturkey and jessabethany. I had considered both things. However I've really screwed things up now. In an attempt to remove the logic board so that I could see the underside (where the supposed backlight fuse is located), I gave up for fear that I'd do damage and unable to figure out how to completely free the board, so I put it back together, exactly as I had disassembled it. Now I have no power at all. Clearly I either damaged or disconnect something to the power. My AC cable light is green, I've done the SMC and PRAM resets and still nothing. I'm about to scrap this thing for parts because I've put so much time into it. It's such a nice computer, though. I hate to do that. Anything else I can try to restore power? A specific wire that I may have forgotten to re-attach? Any help is appreciated.

Melinda--don't give up! I love to see women cracking open their MacBooks! Know that you can always pull the rip cord and send your laptop in for a motherboard repair. We do free estimates for late-model MacBooks.

Put up some pictures, help us see what is going on in there. MacBooks can be tougher than you think. I have a bunch of boards just hanging out in a file cabinet. Slap a fan on them, attach a DCin-board and charger and you can see the fan spin.

Take the battery out while you're troubleshooting.

Now disconnect everything from the board and lift out of the housing. disconnect the cables on the bottom side to free the board.

Add back your DC board input. Add back a fan. Add back a speaker.

Plug in your charger.

Does the fan spin? Do you hear chime?

I'm definitely not afraid to crack open the macbook tear out a wall, or use my power tools! But I am afraid of doing damage to the motherboard. I'll try your suggestions, take some pics, and get back to you.

Thanks!

I did it! All by myself! I removed the logic board, located the fuse, cleaned the board with alcohol, and dropped a drop of solder on the fuse. Everything is working!
