Why won't the candy or sugar melt?

When candy or sugar is placed into the device, it does not melt or turn into cotton candy once the device is turned on.

Does it heat up right when I plug it in? Or do I have to press a button?

Hi Paris;

All machines that I have seen have the safety feature of a button or a toggle switch. However, it shouldn't take too long to heat up! Plug your machine in, turn it on, and let it run with the heat going for about 2 minutes. Then unplug it, and hover your hand over the grate. You should feel a slight heat coming off of it (not too much, though!). If you don't, it might be a slower machine. One machine I had took about 4-5 minutes to heat, and another one I had took about 90 seconds. It depends! :)

Hey Nicholas

If the candy is not melting there are a number of possible problems. Its likely that The device is not given enough warm up time, too much candy or sugar is being put in the extractor head, or the candy is unevenly spaced.

It is recommended that you give the device at least ten minutes to warm up before placing candy or sugar. Make sure you are using the correct amount of candy for the device, as directed in your manual. If you are using hard candy it is recommend that you distribute them evenly along the extractor head.

Hello Nicholas;

As I have taken apart my own machine apart several times, I have found that, if I have connected the wires to the heat ribbon on the wrong sides of the head, the machine will not heat. Just like a battery- the wires need to connect to the positive and the negative. So, try putting the wires on different sides of your machine's head. You might have to disassemble and reassemble the machine a couple of times. To prevent the waste of sugar, run your machine empty (but not too long!). If the heat knob is all the way up, and the heat starts to work, you should know within a minute or two if this is the case. Hopefully this simple solution is the case :)

Hey Bralyn;

An odd sound? That could be a couple of things, but without hearing it, it's hard to diagnose. If it is coupled with some shaking, you could have a carriage bolt that is broken, or a spring is wearing out. If not, it is probably the motor itself, and you will probably have to get it looked at. Hope this helps! :)

Caster sugar is like powdered sugar, and that's too fine to be used in a candy floss machine. Until you get the hang of it, I would suggest going with pre-mixed cartons! :) I use cane sugar & flossine from Amazon for my own mixes. Try to tip as much of the caster sugar out as possible- it can really gunk up a machine! It's so fine that it can get into cracks & such. You don't want that!

Another thing- when you first turn on a machine & are getting it up to temperature, it should smell hot & burning for a bit. I turn my machine on and let it burn off the old sugar before I put new sugar in. Then I will turn the temp down, let it run for about 10 seconds, then I turn the machine off, quickly fill the head with my mixture, then flip it back on as quickly as I can. This gives a fresh start to the candy. Be sure to throw away the little bit of floss that first comes out, as you may get half-melted chunks in it or a slight residue of burn flavor! :)
