Boot Failure 9 beeps

Hí,

Recently my iMac Late 2009, when booting you can hear 9 beeps (3 short, 3 long and 3 short), this url, the problem indicates that it has detected a corruption of the ROM EFI and the team is in recovery mode EFI ROM, but if I leave, the screen goes black.

So far everything seems normal, but this only happens when I turn off the computer, ie if I connect the device to the electric current on first boot the computer functions normally, if I turn it off and back on again, the team gets to the screen in black and I must disconnect the power cord, leaving about 5 seconds and plugging it back.

This procedure clears the NVRAM, so I'm not sure if the battery of the device is in poor condition or it may be something else.

I hope your opinions, thank you and happy holidays.

  • Update 07/02/2015:

The technical service of apple, suggests to me that is due to the ram, but I should take it for service. I changed the ram by a new and still under the same conditions.

Please give us the last four figures of your serial number located on the bottom of the stand. Also the Exact type of RAM you are trying to install.

Hi,

The last four are: 45PC

The RAM is DDR3 2GB 2Rx8 PC3-8500S-07-10-F2 (the same type that the originals).

Thanks

Remove one of the RAM sticks. On the first reboot, zap the PRAM. It should work now. You can now replace the RAM.

Arturo Blanco, the (3 short, 3 long and 3 short) code is the corrupted EFi bios beep codes. It is possible that the BIOS by some EFi update. "Newer computers automatically recover from a corrupted ROM; when this occurs a progress bar appears on a grey background. Do not disturb the machine while the ROM recovery is taking place." I'd start off by resetting the SMC and PRAM. Then I'd go on checking the RAM. Remove one module at a time and isolate with one known-good memory module installed in one memory slot. Repeat by testing in other memory slots. Restart and see if that makes a difference. Check the diagnostics LED on your logic board and let us know what they display.

LED Functions

LED #1

• Indicates that trickle voltage from power supply has been detected by logic board. This LED will remain ON whenever the iMac is connected to a working AC power source. The LED will remain on even when computer has been shut down or put to sleep. The LED will turn off only if AC power source is disconnected or power supply is faulty.

LED #2

• Indicates that logic board has detected power from power supply when computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when computer is turned on and power supply and voltage regulators are working correctly.

LED #3

• Indicates that computer and video card are communicating. This LED will be ON when computer is communicating properly with video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement. Note: LED #3 is not present on models with integrated graphics.

LED #4

• Indicates that computer and LCD panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If LED 4 is ON and there is no image on display, then LCD panel, LED backlight board, or cables between might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

Last but not least, I would definitely replace the PRAM (coin) battery on your logic board. Hope this helps, good luck.

I have checked all LEDs and operates everything is correct to start the first time, I turn off the computer and LED 1 on stays, when I press the button to light, LED 2 lights up but does not light up LED 4.

The strange thing is that if you reset the SMC (disconnected the power cord for 10 seconds), the computer boots perfectly.

I have used and I've made the switch in the stack, but still showing the same symptoms, also I changed the ram with a new one.

I remplaced the PRAM battery with the same results.

Did you reset the SMC & PRAM after replacing the battery? Either way do it again.

完成的

Good Morning,

I tried the new RAM in all slots available doing a PRAM and SMC reset on each test.

The result remains unchanged, when it takes over a minute off and connected to the electric current does not start and the 9 beeps are emitted. (All test after I replaced the battery).

Don't Worry. Just replace the CMOS cell (also known as RTC Cell or Coin Cell) on the motherboard and you should be ready to go😀
