iPhone 3G Glass/Digiter Replacement: Screen Now Black

Ok, so I replaced the glass and put it back together only to get a black screen. I took it back apart and I think the #3 ribbon was pulled out but I'm not certain. The whole time, the phone functions (iTunes sync, mute button toggle causes vibration).

So here's what I've done with no success:

1. Changed back to the old (cracked) screen

2. Attempted hard reset (power + home). I'm not certain the home button was working at this point.

3. Discharged battery, recharged, hard reset

4. Discharged, re-seat cables 1, 2, 3. Charge. Hard Reset

5. Discharged. Pull logic board from battery to allow full power down. Reassemble. Charge. Startup. Hard reset.

Its sitting on the wall charger now in some hope that it needs a full charge for a proper hard reset.

Any ideas?! Help would be greatly appreciated as Google's not giving me much at this point.

Oh, I've tried to swipe the unlock button several times, but I've never heard the unlock sound so I'm pretty sure both the LCD and the digitizer aren't being recognized.

Thanks in advance....

Lucas

I had this to also my battery acted like it was dead so I tore down the phone and took a small paint brush the kind that kids use to paint paint by #s real small but, not the fake ones with the hard plastic hairs. Mine has nice soft hairs like a real paint brush anyway, I brushed out all the connected cabels each side then I took a drop of alcohol, rubbing alcohol I used the clear and, rebrushed all connectors, I made certain I got the mother board connected in good this time. Put it all back together and, walla its working with a few issues like not finding a service connection but, its better then before.. I hope this helps someone..

if the screen is black completely ie no faint home screen, and you've tried reseating the connector (no 1) with no luck then it is either the wrong screen ( i had a new lcd for a 3g which didn't fit-check the model number is for the screen you bought) or you have broken another lcd.

I foun a local shop that had LCD to test with. Turns out that I cooked the LCD during digitized replacement. Something in the repair must have killed it as iused an antistatic pad and gloves.

I have had this problem several times on the same phone, I let it sit for 2-3 days with the logic board out of the phone. I found on my last install when my customers power switch would not work properly:

1. Disconnect the #4 cable and tilt the motherboard up so it does not contact the battery.

2. Connect all the connectors for the face.

3. set the motherboard down on the battery.

4. Connect the #4 cable and the LCD worked properly.

Shut down the phone properly and reinstall the motherboard screws

Good luck

I've created an account just to let others know that Steve's solution up above did it for me. It appears indeed that the iPhone gets "confused" when power is still running through the circuits and the screen/digitizer combo is fiddled with.

And that's why as George above also noted, you NEED to turn your phone off completely before playing around in its guts. The motherboard does indeed get "tricked" into thinking the LCD is on when it is not.

Good call you guys - cheers!

+1 for Steve! I figured I must have bent the connector the wrong way, and I was not happy. (I had just finished replacing the back, dock connector, home button, and camera). Everything was working perfectly except the home button wasn't aligned properly, and I must have forgotten to turn it off when I opened it up to adjust it. I lifted the motherboard from the battery, and now everything is working great!

You are my hero. I have replaced at least 20 digitizer screen/glass combinations. Mine once, wife once and everybody I know that has an iPhone that is scared to do it.

This stumped me and I was about to just give up because I can do it with my eyes shut. Thanks for the great answer.

I joined just to say thank you and give a rep.

+1 for steve method... kind of.

I was replacing the LCD and I had it successfully turn on once, but then turned it off (I thought) and disconnected everything because the glass/digitizer was popping up. repaired that and hooked everything back up but nothing was showing up on screen.

tried unhooking and re-hooking everything up to no avail.

then unhooked #4, unscrewed all motherboard screws, lifted it from the battery, hooked up the screen, hooked up 4 -- STILL NOTHING!

so, I unhooked the screen again, did the screws back up. sat there perplexed. tried hooking the screen up one more time, and voila! turns on for some reason? Maybe the battery was disconnected long enough to shut the system down and let the last screen hook up take? dunno...

phone is working again!

same problem for me too... i replaced the actual LCD screen and the glass digitizer, when i replaced the glass the original LCD worked fine except for the black spots that i caused (reason for replacing) but when i tried to replace the actual LCD the screen is now black though i still hear the sounds.

restoring had no help to me so im open and begging for new ideas!!!

UPDATE: my screen does light up but its still black, so something is being recognized but it wont show anything but a lit up black screen

This does not give me hope. :( Did anyone get this to work or did it require replacement?

The restore worked for me, thank goodness! Turned on just fine after that, and charging overnight.

I have a very old 3g which had this problem when I replaced the screen and digitiser yet again. I connected it to my computer, did a restore from the backup I'd made in itunes before starting the repair and it started up again just fine, which was a relief as tinyumbrella etc can no longer work with such an ancient operating system (still using 3.1.3!)

when you take apart an iPhone 3G/3Gs... do not forget to turn it off before you take it apart. it usually in a way "tricks" your motherboard into thinking your LCD is on when it is not, and and when it is all together your LCD is black. so don't forget to turn it off before you start the repair..

Yes, although I did switch it off before starting, I was struggling to get the latest new screen to slot back in when reassembling and accidentally pressed the power on button before I'd finished, which caused this problem - thankfully fixed by simply doing restore from backup in itunes

Once the screen would light up faintly but stay black, we called the iphone and when it lit up faintly again, do a 10 second hard reset while it is still lit up and the apple will appear, and the screen will come back on-back to normal

All, Thanks for the feedback I appreciate the kind words.

Rob,

At this point I would disassemble the phone completely, primarily remove the front assembly and motherboard. Let the phone sit for 5-10 min, then reassemble. While you are waiting read through the teardown for your phone and familiarize yourself with the connections, but here is how I would reassemble:

1. Place the motherboard in with something propping it up off of the battery connections.

2. Connect the LCD, Digitizer and ear speaker(cables 1, 2, and 3)

3. Connect the On/off ribbon cable and the GPS antenna Cables 5 and 6.

4. Remove the object propping up your phone and set the motherboard on the battery connection install the screw holding it down on the battery.

5. Connect the Charging dock and Wi-Fi antenna(3Gs only) (cables 4 and 7)

When the phone boots up normally, shut it down properly, remove the front assembly and install the rest of your screws.

Try this a few times and if it still doesn't work I would say the ribbon cable needs to be addressed.

Hope this helps!

I've got the same issue. I've restored the phone and it completes it goes into DFU mode and it vibrates at times but there's no picture. The phone LCD is completely dead. I've taken it apart disconnected and reconnected the wires and I've had no luck.

I did notice while I was in the phone that the #4 conector wasn't connected after I did a complete restore to custom firmware. Now I don't think it came loose when I popped the screen loose so this has me interested.

had same as above problem (black screen on reassembly) after replacing the complete 3 part lcd screen, digitizer / button assembly, i got mine working by holding both the on/off button and the front screen button on or down together, the apple logo came in view and the problem seems to be rectified, leaving it on charge over night and all so far seems ok, seems that i did not power off properly as other people mention but, i couldn't due to the damage sustained with it being thrown at me in a row with the enemy at home!, lol.

Thank you very much this was extremely helpful! I had the same issue with my iPad 2. I replaced he digitizer and my LCD seemed to stop working after I replaced the cracked screen. I assumed that I had cracked the LCD during the removal of the screen. I purchased a new LCD but it still did not work. After reading your answers, I realized what the problem was. I turned off the iPad and then turned it back on and vuala it worked just fine.

Guys I have the same problem but can not understand what Steve is asking me to do. I replaced the power button circuitry and now I just get a blank screen with the occasional vibration from it. I have a faint back light though. Which one is the 4 cable and what does he mean but tilt it away from the battery. Do I tack the motherboard completely out again and disconnect all the wires??

I'm ver confused and very fustrated

Can someone pleeeease help ?

Thanks

Thanks Steve, I did what you said but to no avail. Eventually I gave up and a local repair shop charged me £15 to make sure I put it all back together correctly. I had but what i had done was when i unscrewed the power putton on my iPhone 4 i bent the digitizer cable right back instead of folding it in half to get to the screw. This was why the screen was not working. I sorced a new one locally for £25 and it now works fine. So big tip guys........ to unscrew the power botton housing fold the digitizer cable in half, NOT right back on itself.

Hope this helps others !

Thanks

Rob

Thanks a lot ;-)

I installed a program and it got frozen, reactivation with power home,

but stays on the startup logo.

Could not turn off, nor DFU or whatsoever.

So opened the iphone to check home button and in doing so disconnected the LCD.

After reassembly this resulted in a black screen.

Now I've got the startup logo back and that is an improvement :-)

And now the rest, but that will be another story

Thanks again for thr help !

Have a nice day.

OK!

I have been through all of this and here are my answers:

1. If you accidently turn on an iPhone before connecting the display the LCD is off when it should be on

2. The EASIEST fix is to download the software called 'Tiny Umbrella'

3. Once you have installed the software just click enter recovery and then exit recovery and bingo your phone should turn back on
