Can I Upgrade Airport to 802.11AC?

Mac Mini (late 2006) Model A1176

My goal is to make my mini into a 802.11AC access point (AP) and a NAS. I know the thing doesn't have the antennae needed, but hey I got a Dremel ;)

Would this card work with my mini ?

The thing I'm worried by is the mini pcie connection, is it compatible? The pins seem to be similar (looking at the picture)

There's a lot more to getting 802.11 ac throughput than just installing a card. Router and network have to support it also.

Router and network?

I think the first and foremost need for the 802.11AC speed is to be able to provide sufficient bandwidth for my mac book pro (NAS & Internet). The mini has gigabit ethernet as well, so it shouldn't be a big bottleneck for my LAN access needs. ISP provides me with 100Mbit so obviously the biggest gains would be in the NAS access with my mac book.

Sadly, I don't think you'll be able to here. While the hardware may work the needed drivers are part of a newer OS-X release that your mini can't support.

You'll need Mavericks 10.9.x or better, but are stuck on Leopard 10.6.x as the highest this system will go.

This should not be a problem as some people have succeeded in upgrading the CPU to T7600 C2D and thus have 64bit support. This enables Yosemite in their mini, right?

I know this is quite a lot of tinkering to have a Airport Time capsule that consumes heaps of power compared :D

Sorry, wishful thinking on someones part. The root issue besides your current CPU limitations is the systems BIOS is only 32bit. So no matter what CPU could even work in this system it still won't run Yosemite. BTW - The best CPU this series could support is only a 1.83 GHz Core Duo (T2400). I think your money and effort would be better spent on a newer unit.

Okay it seems I got carried away a bit :D

The EFI is not a problem either... I think. Some people have managed to get the Mac Mini 2,1 firmware flashed after they have upgraded their CPU to C2D. Mac Mini 2,1 is 64bit and enabled people to have Lion and even Mountain Lion with the help of 32bit GMA950 kexts.

But yeah the bloody GMA950 not having 64bit kexts is where this journey ends! Thanks for your comments!
