Swap bluetooth 4.0 to support handoff

Hello,

MacBook Pro 13-inch Early 2011 Model A1278

My wife MacBook doesn't support Yosemite handoff feature. Based on this chart the later 2012 does support it - http://www.theapplelounge.com/feature/ex...

I tested with the Continuity Activation tool - http://www.macrumors.com/2014/10/23/cont...

Mine say version LMP=4 when it should be 6, confirmed this in the system preferences report as well.

I was hoping I could buy the Bluetooth network card for the later 2012 model and install it to be able to enable handoff?

Has anyone tried this? If so could you provide the link to the correct Bluetooth card to purchase.

Yes, you can swap out the AirPort board with a newer unit. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 AirPort/Bluetooth Board Replacement. And you'll need this: MacBook Pro 13" and 15" Retina (Late 2012/Early 2013) Airport/Bluetooth Board.

I read that and also looked at the Retina BT card, they two cards look completely different.

See the older is a push in pin style - MacBook Pro Unibody (Early 2011-Mid 2012) AirPort/Bluetooth Board

Where the retina is a two prong insert type, similar to the way ram is installed.

So it seems they are not interchangeable as the earlier one also is installed in a tray, that is bolted down, where as the Retina doesn't have this.

Basically you need a Broadcom BCM94331PCIEBT4CAX board otherwise there is no means to convert your system.
