Static coming from speakers

My iPhone 4s suddenly won't play s I sounds through the loudspeaker but instead there's static. Sound plays fine through earphones. I read on some sites that a q tip in the earphone jack usually corrects it, but this was not the case. I don't know if it's related, but this began shortly after connecting the phone to an Otterbox charging case. Can someone point me in the right direction?
