permissions/verify disc problem & front row update not possible

I don't know if these 2 problems are related but i know they always come back! I HAVE REFORMATED MY HD TWICE BUT AFTER SOME TIME SAME PROBLEM AGAIN...

Everytime i try to run Front Row update 2.1.7 i get the following message: The update “Front Row Update” can’t be installed A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.

Now about the permissions, if i run the permission repair, i always get this:Repairing permissions for “MAC OS”

no mater how many times i will run the permission repair, i'll always get the same thing...

Now if i try to "verify HD" i get this:Performing live verification.

The volume MAC OS needs to be repaired.

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.

I don't really know how this affect the performances of my macbookpro(2.4Ghz 4Gb RAM2) but it bothers me, i process 21MB photo files all the time and it gets sooooo slow... WHAT TO DO? THANKS

Try booting into single user mode and running fsyk -y to repair your disk.

fsyk -y is the command that you type in to verify and repair the disk.

To boot into single user mode hold down apple+s at startup until you see the black and white text scrolling. Then, once the prompt is there, type in exactly this:

fsyk -y

Don't forget the space between the k and -

thanks for the info. In fact i went to the apple store and the guy ran DISKWARRIOR soft and it fixed the directory problems. Now i can do the "verify disc" and it is ok. I still have the permissions issues but the guy said it is no big deal. Meanwhile a dude walked by, (he seemed to know what he was talking about) and after listening to my conversation with the apple technician added that it is useful sometimes to leave your computer ON for a day or 2, somehow while doing so it does automatically a great deal of maintenance... I thought i could share that here... THANKS! PS nobody paid attention to my inability to run the "front row update"... so why should i worry hu?

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.

You have a FUBAR Master Directory and it needs to be fixed... things will only go downhill from here in a hurry to the point where your HD is hosed comepletly! This is why your permissions can't be repaired.

First thing make a backup!

TechTool, DiskWarrior and/or other directory maintenance apps. should be able to fix this. (run maintenance or directory maintenance)

If not, you need to repartition and reinstall your OS.

The only thing I can find about a -3001 error pertains to iTunes. So this solution may work, or it may not.

IMnsHO you have a corrupt download of the update file, on top of your Master Directory problems.

You should download a new copy of the update, and if there is a "combo" update file use it.

What he was referring to was the maintenance scripts which your computer runs at odd hours.

You can run them manually at the command line with:

sudo daily weekly monthly

or using a tool such as Onyx.
