I'm planning to transfer a hard drive from a laptop that is broken to a nearly identical laptop that does work, so I can access the data on the drive. Is there any reason to think that it won't work? I've never handled an internal drive before, just external ones.

So long as both computers are G4's and approx the same cpu speed it should work. I have to caution you there will always be a possibility of damaging the good computer in the process so I would not swap just to transfer data. I would use an external hookup for the drive I wanted the data from and leave the good computer alone. Now if you are making a permanent change I'd say go for it. Ralph

as far as i know, swapping harddrives should work. if you put it into a computer of same kind, you probably will not need to even reinstall it.
i have done the same when i was building my MacBook Pro, out off replacement parts i have bought all over the world. i have used some old hdd i have pulled out of box, one with Win XP preinstalled on it.
it have run it, with problems, but run it...
so my friend, dont be afraid, it will work.

in the ointment would be if you were trying to boot to an unsupported OS For example if you had only an OS 7-9 system trying to boot a G4 that wouldn't boot to classic. OR the original install was for "this macintosh only" and some needed extensions were left out.
Other than that I can't think of a reason you'd have a surprise.

hmmm! am not certain about that, but you can try out the suggestions given to you earlier on. What helps me is online storage which I've Mac and windows share one account. I can also securely access my data from any browser anywhere on this planet.
I use www.safecopybackup.com. They offer 3GB free trial if don't mind checking it out.
