Quality of Battery Replacement and New vs A-Stock

I have been having strange problems with my computer MacBook Air 13" a1369. Often-twice or three times a month-I have to download and reinstall Mavericks. After checking, I am leading myself to believe that it may be the battery. It seems to be stuck at 131 cycles. If the charger is charging (amber light) and I shut down the machine, I have to load Mavericks the next time I boot. Not charging (green light) no problem the next time.

I replaced the SSD with an OWC 480GB drive so opening the case is simple. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before me and also am wondering the difference between iFixit's New vs. A-Stock batteries.

I've been reading the Amazon site and there seem to be a lot of problems with poor/slow performance with their new batteries. Replacing with the old battery brings performance back up to speed albeit with a dying battery.

Any help will be appreciated.

Your battery cycle count is deep discharge not trickle charge based. So the counter maybe correct here. to test it leave the system running monitoring the spent battery indicator don't plug in the system until it is less than 5% left. That should cause the system to do a full recharge and bump the count. 131 cycles is not very many so I wouldn't worry about that. You may need to work on better charging habits here as you will over time lessen the batteries ability to hold a deep charge. At which point you will need to buy a new battery.

But frankly, I think you have a deeper problem here. You're telling us the OS on the SSD is getting corrupted as you have to reload it. Just so we are clear here when you shut down the computer and restart it the OS does load from the internal SSD - Correct. And if you have a prepped thumb drive with the OS on it when the system fails to boot up you can boot up off of the thumb drive - Correct.

If both are correct your SSD has a problem and you need to talk with OWC on a replacement.

Thanks Dan. I was hoping for a simple fix, like the battery, but it looks like I will have to replace the SSD. Thanks for your comment. I'm able to Command-R and then I download from the Apple Store Mavericks. It's a pain in the butt, but it works. At least I learned after the first fiasco that none of the data was lost after the install. Originally I chose the wrong option and had to reload from a bad/crashed (unknown to me at the time) Time Machine backup. That was a six day ordeal. Thanks again.

Try to see if a thumb drive with a bootable OS will work. That way you can continue to use your system. Besides it will verify the issue is the SSD. As it will be stable unlike your internal SSD.

Thank you. I will try that. Also, I have been in contact with OWC. They are suggesting that I wait a couple of weeks for a new firmware update before attempting to replace the drive. So I'm waiting.

Apple just released this EFI firmware update: MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.9.1. Is this the firmware they were speaking of?

No. It's the firmware for the SSD, not the Macbook Air.
