Replaced Optical Drive with 1TB HD, mac continually not respondin.WTD?

Hi, hi have a unibody macbook pro late 2011 (model nomber A1286). i recently replaced the optical bay with a 1TB hard disk. I also upgraded to maveriks, and my computer keep not responding (when i use the finder, disk utility etc.) and also sometimes doesn't recognize the hard disk installed instead of the optical drive.

I used your guide (which is excellent BTW), but when i reached step 8, i stripped one of the screws and had to cut the plastic/metal in order to diconnect the bluetooth.

(i didn't cut any of the cables...

Can you help me figure out how to fix this problem?

Should i downgrade to Mac Mountain Lion OS X?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Can you give us the make & model of the HD you put in.

HI Dan, thanks for your help.

The HD Model is "Seagate Momentus Laptop HDD 1 TB SATA-300"

Is this model compatible?

I used the link you provided, and it seems my EFI firmware is up to date.

Will try your suggestion (i have a USB case).

Thanks again

Michael

Just saw that my HD is 6Gb/s, can i do anything to make it work?

Also, i'd really appreciate it if you can tell me which HD model is fully compatible in the optical bay..

Thank you

Unless the drive has a means to slow the I/O speed to SATA II (3 Gb/s) there is no other possible solution here within the optical drive location internally.

Oh, i see. Does that it mean no other HD would be compatible?

I would start by making sure I had the latest EFI firmware installed on the system. Follow this Apple TN: EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

Next I would take this drive out of the system and install it into a FireWire or USB case or use a SATA to USB converter cable to test & prep the drive.

If the drive was working at this point and still failed when I installed the drive again I would check the specs of the drive as the SATA I/O speed of this drive maybe too fast for the system via the optical drive I/O port. Review this note OWC has for their carrier: Optical to SATA Drive Converter Bracket Solution.

Here's the note they have:

"Testing has demonstrated that Apple factory hardware does not reliably support a 6G (6Gb/s) Solid State Drive or Hard Disk Drive in the optical bay of 2011 MacBook Pros (ModeI ID8,1; 8,2; 8,3)"

You may want to consider returning this drive and buy instead a larger drive to replace your primary drive. But instead of a HD I would go with a SSHD hybrid drive which will give you better performance. Seagate makes a good one. We have moved off of dual drive setups and have gone this way as a better solution for us (better battery life & more reliable).
