I am looking to make my iPhone 5 act as a USB

I have an iPhone 5 and would like to use it as an external USB drive (i.e. to drag drop files from my computer to the iPhone). Is this at all possible?

I know with the old iPod Classic types, once could enter into Disk Mode and do that but I have no clue when it comes to the iPhone

You can use i2usb.

It can be downloaded from https://www.appteak.com/product/i2usb.

It makes your iPhone to a flash drive.

iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch do not work in disk mode as your old iPod classic would have in the past.

If you have to transfer files between multiple computers and you don't necessarily want to use iTunes to add the documents/files to your iPhone, you may also look at this guide:

Turn your iPhone into a USB flash drive

There are a number of apps on the App Store both free and paid (USB Disk, USB Sharp, Documents, etc) which will make your iphone behave more or less like a USB drive though. Just install one such app and use iTunes to add any kind of file to your iPhone.

This is possible with both third party apps and if the device is jailbroken he can transfer any file, any size to his device from a mac or pc via ssh.

@Majesty, looks to me like this is what Hugo K is suggesting (without the jailbreak) It is stated that the iPhone does not support Disk Mode unless one uses third party software. It is not suggested that it is not possible.

Yes, both the iPhone & iPad can be used as storage drives via USB connection.

But remember you then limit your self on what the storage space available for your iPhone or iPad apps & stuff.

If I remember correctly you need to set it via iTunes when the iPhone or iPad is connected via the USB port to make it visible via USB.

No. There is no disk access to iOS devices such as the iPhone 5. You used to have to enable to Flag within the Summary page on iTunes to see it as a removeable storage device on Windows Explorer. Since upgrading to iTunes 10.6 & iOS 5.1 - this ability to see the "removeable storage" of the iPhone has been disabled.

OT - It appears once you set it in the older iTunes/iOS it holds the setting. My iPad 2 with the newest iOS still shows up as a drive in my OS-X and Windows 7 systems.

might as well use software like Coolmuster, which allows you to turn a iPhone, iPad and iPod into external hard drives
