How to fix a phone that has been drop in water?

Today I fell in the pool for 5 secs and my iphone 4 was in my back pocket, after that I took my phone out. Then, my phone wouldn't turn on, i charged it and wouldn't turn on, so i waited 5 hours for it to turn on. After that, the screen was dark black and wouldn't work at all. I looked up how to open an iphone 4 and then i found out that i needed tools and a new battery. I also noticed that the back and front camera had a little bit of water....so now i want to know if there is anything else i can do with that phone or should i just buy another.

Natalia Torres, the best thing to do is to stop using the device, (remove the battery) and to totally disassemble it. By continuing to try to charge it or using it, you are increasing the chance of a short circuit. Here are the guides to help you with that. Use some sterile water and rinse the parts off to remove the gross contamination. Then clean it with +90% isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush. This will displace the water and stop corrosion. Use this guide to get it cleaned. It is written for a 3G but applies to your phone as well. It is okay to submerge a board in isopropyl alcohol. After that, air dry all the components. Do not forget to clean the connectors on the board as well as the cables. Then re-assemble with a new battery This is not optional but a must to avoid failure later on. Check your board for any missing or damaged component. Water damage is the toughest to trouble shoot and to repair. Hope this helps, good luck.

Charged it? Ouch.

I'm sure that you have oxidized the positive side of every capacitor on the main power lines....but it's possible that you could get lucky and they may still function.

Go ahead with a thorough cleaning---pay attention specifically to the LCD connector socket near the top of the board, and the battery connector near the bottom. Get a toothbrush and go to town on it with rubbing alcohol, or better yet, some thin flux from radio shack and then rubbing alcohol. Flux is great at removing oxidation.

good luck!

If you need to recover data after and you cellphone is dead, it has some compagnies in States that offer recovery data and pictures from the memory chip itself. I saw it for my manager. It cost 150$ including shipping return.

You may try the following tips to rescue your water damaged iPhone:

1) Turn if off immediately if it is still on.

2) Dry it off with a towel or something similar.

3) Remove the battery, SIM card etc off the phone.

4) Put iPhone in a bowl of rice or in a bunch of silica packets.

5) Bury the iPhone and wait for a day or two.

If that wouldn't work out, you can refer to the tutorial here: How to Recover Data from Water Damaged iPhone to save the data on that phone.

Oh heavens, not a recommendation for RICE! There is no substitute for properly stripping your phone down to a bare board, and cleaning it. Certainly not a grain with insignificant power as a dessicant.
