Will Samsung SSD 840 EVO use it's full potential?

Hi,

I've decided to upgrade my old iMac.

It's an 20" mid 2007, Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, EMC 2133.

I've invested in a Samsung SSD 840 EVO, Model: MZ-7TE500.

I've looked around in the "Answers" for Device; "iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210". And I have one concern... Will it use it's full potential on my old mac?

Kind regards,

Eirik

You may find going with a hybrid drive (SSHD) would be a better setup for you.

A hybrid drive is a standard HD with a SSD mounted with it to act as a very deep cache. The benefit of using a hybrid is you hold onto the large storage of a HD but get the quickness of the SSD. These drives are also cheaper than a straight SSD and you don't need to swap out the optical drive if you want both your HD and SSD (less work) and you'll get the best I/O for your storage.

Your iMac has a SATA II (3Gb/s) bus for the hard drive slot. The 840EVO supports up to SATA III (6Gb/s).

In short, you won't be able to truly use the SSD to its fullest potential. That being said, installing the SSD in the iMac will still make a very noticeable increase in speed and responsiveness.
