My iMac A1174 slowed,I upped the RAM to max & it was ok for 6 months, over the last 12 months horizontal lines have appeared on the screen, performance has slowed a lot, it kept freezing and I got a white screen occasionally. I reloaded the OS, 10.5.8 and now it is completely frozen and won't do anything even after rebooting. What is wrong or more correctly what may need replacing please?

Does it still boot up with the OS-X installer DVD? If it does try running from the main menu Disk Utility and check out your hard drive. As an option here you could also use an external HD that is bootable, doing the same thing.
