MBP suddenly shows blue screen, shuts down.

Hi guys. I have an MBP running Mountain Lion with a brand new SSD. I changed the HDD because I felt that my earlier HDD wasn't functioning properly.

What happens is that in the middle of my workflow, there is a blue screen, and everything hands. The keyboard lights are on, the apple logo is glowing, and suddenly the fans start rotating really fast. Thinking that it might a problem with heat, I opened the laptop up, opened the heat sink, cleaned everything in between and re-applied thermal paste on the heat sink. It worked fine, for a day.

And then - blue screen, turns completely black, fans rotate really fast, and turns off by itself again.

Please help.

Edit - I just ran the apple hardware test and everything shows up okay. Event then, I still have issues with the laptop suddenly freezing, fans rotate really fast and the system turns itself off. I'm really vexed. Please help!

Often when heat is an issue running AHT once shows no errors. You have to run it 2 or 3x in succession to create enough heat to cause the issue.

By default if there's too much heat, or a heat sensor fails, the fans go into full speed mode to try to keep the user from cooking the CPU. You should save and quit when this behavior begins.

Applying thermal paste is an art. You need to completely remove the old paste and put a thin coat on the heat-sink, doing it wrong can cause overheating.

There are many other causes for BSOD from RAM to GPU/logic board to bad cache files on the HD. Heat sink problems would not be my first pick.

Try a Safe Boot. If that works you have HD issues.

Are you absolutely certain your SSD spec.'s fit your box (e.g. SATA III 6GB/s)?

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Any updates on this issue? I am using the same MBP from my wife and after a few days of no problem, it happened:

  • A hot battery
  • Fans making noise
  • Flickering in the screen, then blue
  • After a few restarts, same problem every time.

Situation (that might give some clues):

  • MBP power cord was plugged in last few days, when blue screen happened, it wasn't (battery 20%)
  • Google Drive (local) failed to load. When quitting it and restarting it , the blue screen happened right away (might be a coincidence).

Any tips for a non-techie?
