Is the mini PCIe slot mSATA?

Hi I'm about to purchase an iMac and I'm just learning by your teardown that there's a mini PCIe slot. Would that connector be faster if I stick a mini PCIe SSD in there instead of a SATA SSD, like a Crucial M550 or a Samsung EVO Pro?

Technically the SSD connector is an M.2 Interface.

As to what your system is using it's the PCIe version of M.2 (per Apples documentation), as such only PCIe SSD devices will work (you can't plug in just anything). In fact, Apple is still currently the only supplier for the correct SSD units to fit and work in this system.

As to speed: PCIe is the next step in I/O speed, being faster than SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) the current fastest SATA spec out there.

I would recommend getting a fusion drive model Vs a HD only model as the amount of work to get to the M.2 connector to put in a SSD later is a lot of work (if that is your direction).

Thanks for answering, after a lot of research (and a few attempts to find a knowledgable person to chat with at Apple) they told me that if you order the SSD option, the chips are hardwired (which I think he meant soldered to the logic board) and not PCIe but the speed is virtually the same... so I will suck it up and order the 512 SSD from Apple instead of getting a third party SATA SSD double the size for the same price if the first option is going to be faster.

Will Apple void your warranty if you do the installation?

Guillermo - Click on the blue link I posted in my answer it describes the M.2 interface connector your system has. There is no choice here, it is what it is, you can't alter it or the logic on the main logic board to support something else.

As to it being a serviceable part: Yes, in the future I'm sure Apple or other third party will make a larger PCIe SSD unit. We'll have to wait and see. In any case its a bit of work to get to if you review the IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 SSD Replacement. So it will need to be worth all of the effort when it does show up.
