What is causing the creaking from the rear of my car?

I have a creaking sound coming from the left-rear of my Focus. I can hear it from inside at all speeds whenever I go over any kind of bump, or even just driving through a parking garage. The noise is extremely loud when I am jacking any corner of the car. I even jacked up the left rear and used PB Blaster on every bolt and bushing I could find, to no avail.

Update

So greasing the bushings and whatnot didn't end up solving the creak after all. I just replaced my shocks, and in doing so, found out that what is likely making the noise is the upper shock mount, which is located inside the trunk. This explains why the noise almost sounds like it's coming from inside. I was going to post this as an answer and accept it, but the answer I accepted is close enough, because it probably just needs to be greased.

I have no answer. I tried jst about everything. Anyone I"ve spoken to with a Focus seams to have the same problem. Try reporting this to your nearest Ford dealer. If enough people have complained, they may have put out a silent recall. They want to keep people happy. but do not want everyone with a Focus to show up for a fix. So if the silent recall is out there, they will fix it if you complain.

I've pretty much just learned to live with it, but thanks for the tip.

I had the same issue in my Mazda 6 MPS. It was caused by the material between the rear windows and the chassi.

I went to a car glass firm and they cut the window out and removed the old "fastener" and attached the window with new. The problem disappeared after this.

I have a 2004 chrylser sebring and it's doing the same thing it's creaks when driving and makes a crunching noise when over a speed bump. I replaced all 4 of my shocks but to no avail the crunching in the rear is still there...I have no idea what to check next...

I have this issue with my Ford Escape, but it only does it when it is raining., and only then after the exhaust system has warmed up. I now find I have a big buildup of soot on the outside of the muffler. This seems to be an on going issue with many Ford models.

Check your brake wear indicators and brake pads They make a racket when the rub against the rear disks. If it's the indicators, it will be a loud annoying metal on metal squeal. If it's the pads down to metal, it will be a grinding noise, and you will most likely have to replace the rear disk.

Also, grease any fittings you can find. Do not use solvent like WD-40 or PB Blaster as those are penetrants and will take lube away. In addition, if your bolts are loose and causing the creaking on suspension parts, you will be well to go around and tighten them. If you find a rusted one rubbing on a bushing, remove it, clean it and coat it with anit-seize lubricant before putting it back together.

Let us know.

I'll take a look at that. I have rear drum brakes, should I still look at those? It's a little bit of a hassle.

完成的

Yes you can pull the drum off, there should be a toothy sprocket adjustment behind the wheel. If you turn that one way or the other, it will loosen the shoes for you to remove the drum. If they are down to metal it will be noisy all the time, but not when you are stopped and jack it up. No big deal to put it back on, just back up a few time and apply the brakes to adjust the shoes back again.

完成的

Oh, I know how to take them off, and the Focus doesn't have that sprocket, thankfully. I was just asking if your theory about the brakes would also apply to drums as well as discs.

完成的

Sure, any metal on metal will make constant noise. Brakes will when you're rolling.

完成的

Didn't even have to remove the bolts. PB makes a spray can white lithium grease that I just sprayed on every bolt and bushing I could see, and now the noise is gone. Thanks!

I had it and the guys in the garage wanted to change the suspension ...

I hope it's my car seat, I have the same issue at the rear of my fiesta passenger side.

My 2017 Ford explorer had a "rattle" like sound which was driving me nuts. After chasing everything from headliner to seat anchors, I found the metal rings in the right middle row seat (only visible when the seat was partially folded) to be the culprit. A little white lithium grease ended my nightmare. Leather on metal sounds like a rattle - go figure...

Check your rear shock mounts. If they look ok, the problem might be a worn out rubber bushing somewhere in the rear suspension. Also, check out all the connections to your rear sway/torsion bar. It could be an exhaust connection somewhere as well.

I have a 2008 Ford Focus SE and it is making the same noise. Its a very loud creaking noise that sounds like it's coming from the inside, particularly from the rear as if it has something to do with the right back wheel. I was told just yesterday that it can be heard from the outside as well, so of course this raises my concern even more. I'm hoping that it's just the rear shock mount as stated above. Are there any other possible reasons behind this obnoxious creaking sound ?!

Just in front of the rear tire front leaf spring connection the rear brake cable passes through a round metal loop. pull on the cable to move the cable a little bit through the loop and check the cable, it WILL be worn down to the metal. this is what makes the noise. some electrical tape around the cable kept the metal from coming in contact and fixed the problem.

Check the brake cabels going thru the rear angeled bracket that ties into the wheel assembly. It's shaped like the letter A. The cable needs to be looked at for wear. Mine was a little worn and all I did was twist it and sprayed some silcone lube on it and noise went away. Do both sides!!

I had almost 10 different fords during my life. My father in law even started with the famous T-Ford. We both came to the same conclusion: Do'nt worry about a rattling ford.

Worry if it stops rattling!!!

Mike

Jeff you are right about the origin of the noise. I checked both sides. if you grab the the brake line going through the metal loop it will move around and make a noise. take a couple of tie wraps made of plastic and secure the lines tightly against the metal loop.
