My laptop was very dim, and the light diminished to the point where nothing was visible. The laptop still turns on, and is responsive, but that is useless without the ability to see the screen. The screen is pitch black now. Is there a DIY fix for this, or a shop fix? Or is this laptop past the point of no return?

Menkara, There are two distinct reasons for this to happen. One would be a bad inverter, the other is a bad LCD panel. I would start by replacing the inverter, since it is less expensive, then the LCD. Of course, if you have a backlight tester, you will know immediately if it is your LCD or the inverter. The other issue here is that you are dealing with Toshiba. This company is not known for its kindness or willingness to assist anybody with the repair of their devices. This could make it very difficult in obtaining a service manual and the proper parts. So make sure that you take a look at these guides. Hope this helps, good luck.
