My PS3 Slim has a problem too complex to summarize here.

Sorry about the semi-vague question and subsequently lengthy description.

I was trying to fix a corrupted hdd for someone else's PS3 Slim (160GB) today. It kept hanging when trying to repair the file system. So, as a last ditch effort I tried putting their hdd into my PS3 Slim (120GB) so I could boot into safe mode and see if my console might have better luck fixing the file system (both systems are fully updated to the latest version)...

As soon as I plugged the power cord into the back of the console, BEFORE any buttons were pushed, I heard the fan kick on quietly and the blu-ray drive started spinning up, then immediately ejected the game disc that was in it. No lights on the console at all and nothing on the tv (hdmi or composite, tried both). I can load a disc in the drive but it immediately spits it back out at me. And pressing the power button on the front only results in three quick beeps, nothing else. Eject button does nothing.

I've already tried booting to safe mode but couldn't seeing as how it powers on by itself as soon as it's plugged in and the power button does nothing but make it beep three times quickly. I even held the power button down for upwards of 2-3 minutes with no result. Also tried plugging it in WHILE holding the power button down, had no effect whatsoever. I even replaced the power supply with one that I know works fine... same thing, no results.

I repair game consoles and computers for a living, so I'm no stranger to these systems and can diagnose and fix most any problem without much trouble. But this one has me seriously stumped. Any help or insight would be appreciated immensely. Thanks for reading.

Hi,

First connect problematic HDD to PC and check it from there. Format it and make a full test. There is couple of programs for HDD checking. If you have some bad sectors you can try to fix them but this HDD will make problems after. With the PS3 you can make the file system but you can't fix other problems. If after the check the HDD is ok, put it back (already formatted with FAT32) to PS3. The console will ask to format the HDD and install firmware (you must have pen-drive with same or higher version firmware on it).

But if the HDD isn't ok after the test, you can't fix it.

Regards.

Thanks for the response. However, I guess I should've been a little more specific, or you didn't read past the first paragraph... Either way, the hard drive is not my problem. My problem is what happened to my PS3 AFTER I put the corrupted hdd in it. The corrupted drive has since been fixed and put into it's original PS3. However, MY problem still remains.

you know sounds a lot light red light of death but slightly deiiferent. My only suggestion is that there is way to solder the tristate to ground or sbe on mobo. I believe this should allow the ps3 to stay on but you are gonna wanna google or check some ps3 forums for solder points ps3devwiki has a lot of info just putting that one out there. I know this works for hardware flasher e3 nor flash but you solder to the ribbion cable provided with flasher but the same point on ribbon is also on mobo. have you tried putting your hdd back in ps3 only ask cause you didnt say if you tried it or not. You didnt clarify if your friends ps3 was working only that hdd was fixed.

I did put my hdd back in the PS3. As for my friend's PS3, it is working fine. I ended up having to replace his hdd with a brand new one due to his old one having something wrong physically with the platters or whatever which was causing irreparable data corruption. Anyways, I hadn't clarified this because it's really not relevant to my issue. Thanks for your reply and directing me to ps3devwiki. I will definitely check it out.
