PRAM Zapping Tool -- What is going on here?

Hi All!

Someone brought this video to my attention, and I thought I'd post it for discussion. It appears to be a tool for zapping the PRAM of modern MacBooks which won't respond to the traditional method of PRAM password reset. The new method has been largely a mystery, and people are simply told to go to the Apple store to have it done. This is the first time I've seen something attempting to do it, and this video prompts several questions -- is this something we can replicate? Why a different device for different models? Is Apple software being pirated for use in this device?

Thanks,

John

It doesn't look like the tool Apple uses, I had a chance to see it in use quite a few years ago.

From the description his tool is a one time use tool, so it's different from what Apple uses as their tool is re-usable.

The Hack'in'tosh community has been at this for a few years. As I don't monitor their exploits its possible this guy is just burning back a clean copy of the firmware. I'm sure there is some issues in his technique if that is what he is doing (Vs flushing the password alone). That can explain why he has different tools or may not be able to do all EFI's as the chip is different in the newer systems. If the firmware is being burnt back on to the chip this is a form of pirated software as that is not how it was intended to be used.
