Two Part question regarding hard drive and logic board upgrade.

I just recently upgraded my HD and RAM in my 24 iMac. After seeing how easy and cheap it was to do, I have been contemplating upgrading my 15 mb pro.

My mb pro used to work amazing, but after a car accident, the frame was bent. I bought a bottom frame, and transferred everything over; however it never ran the same, the fans ran at full rpm constantly, and eventually the computer died.

I saw a post where someone has a similar issue, where the system won't boot, and the sleep light is solid, and that the issue lies within the logic board. The logic board currently in there has the 2.16 processor. If I were to go through with replacing the logic board, I would be interested in upgrading by using the logic board with the 2.33 processor. Would this transfer without creating any issues?

Also, I would be interested in upgrading the HD as well. I know with the 24'' iMac, it was recommended to stay with the same brand as they use an internal heat sensor. Is that the same case with the mb pro? I was looking to upgrade my 120gb with the 1TB ssd HD in the store, but wasn't sure if it would be a simple swap.

mhoadley,

You will have some minor issues with the HD (SSD) upgrade as your system is only a SATA I (1.5Gb/s). So you do need to make sure the new HD or SSD will work at this I/O speed. The other issue is the size of the 2.5" drive can't be any higher than 9.5 mm. Frankly, I would recommend a hybrid drive also known as a SSHD (HD with a SSD for caching). These drives give you the benefit of space and lower cost Vs having a SSD alone.

As to your logic board swap-out just make sure you stay within the same model family (i.e. MacBookPro2,2) otherwise you will likely have issues with the mounts and connecting things up.

Given this systems memory limit is 3GB (4GB installed) you may want to think about buying a newer system (new or used) Vs putting to much money or effort into this one. Don't get me wrong here I still have a Santa Rosa 15" at home which I still use.

Hello mhoadley,

You can absolutely upgrade your hard drive in your MacBook Pro as easily as switching RAM. Very happily, Apple laptops with standard SATA drives have no crazy catches like the ones in the iMacs.

As for the 2.33GHz logic board, you should be perfectly okay to put it in place of your other logic board. You will notice no difference at all except for a boost in speed. :)
